Have done quite a bit of damage to the RH muffler with the F'ing new kick starter, spoke to one of the local vintage bike guys, he was saying it is quite common and he fixes by bending them out with a vice and a large peice of pipe.

So I thought I'd give it a go, used the tow hitch recess on my ute to try and do this, worked a treat as you will see, I guess I've also increased my chances of it breaking at a later stage, such is life.

Also the kick starter was not square with the pinion, so I added some meat to the arm to square it up ( too stingy to buy hard facing rods, so I used stainless, gee I love welding with stainless ):

The Tufnol spacers arrived today, just fitted them.

Fitted air filter and oil breather line to air filter, just waiting for the vacuum gauges

Got the start nailed, fuel on, 0.5 second prime, full choke and kick, starts first or second time.

Josh,
Where does that rubber hose at the bottom of the last picture with the visible hose clamp on it go? Does it come out of the hole in the front of the oil tank?

Lookin' good.

Hi Dave,

It goes to the air filter, there is a brass fitting into the front, so it is the breather for the oil system ( no mess hopefully, or mess contained within the air filter, much the way it works with the original breather ).

You really shouldn't need to bend your kick lever like that. If you loosen up ALL the muffler & header pipe nuts you should be able to bring the pipe in far enough to have plenty of clearance and then be careful as you snug it up to keep it that way. I had the same thing happen and ended up with plenty of room once I tried. Nice bike, congrads on getting it started. What's the ridding area like where you live?

If you ride upside down, or maybe in reverse, can you drive on the other side of the road?

How long does it take from Gordonvale to Atherton if you're not racing, just keeping a good clip? I'm guessing it's about 40 miles?

Where did you get those air filters? Have you had them on the road yet? I had some K&N foam filters early on, but they looked so much like crap. You can actually see them in my avatar if you look closely, they are green.

KN 99, came with the carbs, I was sceptical about the quality of them, no longer sceptical.

Gordonvale to Atherton, beating the BSA like it owes me money, about an hour.

Apparently an 1:15 taking your time :D .

Mountain roads with waterfalls and lush green hills??? Does the word Jealus mean anything to you? And I come from sunny So California 20 miners from the famouse = ( over crowded with snobs ) beaches.

Vacuum gauges arrived today, now idling nicely, have a colortune on the way, will deal with the finer adjusting of the idle mixture with the colortune.

The wheel man rang today, the wheels are ready, so hopefully off the bricks and onto some K81's within the next week or two.

Still waiting for tank and side covers, the paint guy is puting the clear coat on tomorrow, then the fuel tank sealant the day after, so nearly at a point I can go out and scare myself.

Made up some new plug leads with the NGK resistor caps and standard BP7ES plugs.

Idling nicely at 10-11 inch HG at 1000 RPM as expected.

Wheels arrived, am still having trouble with the rear wheel, the two spacers as seen in the previous photos are the one I removed.

Have a new rear brake drum / sprocket and have powder coated the outside of the drum backing plate.

Isn't it summer there? I don't think you even need the chokes (air slides) to start it up. Tickle 'til it just barely dribbles and kick.

Rear wheel issue sorted, the brake drum was tight against the brake backing plate.

Fitted a 1.5mm thick washer between the small jack shaft and the bearing shoulder/centre on the LH side of the rear wheel ( this is the drum that does not have the bearing fitted and has no cush ).

That's strange. I have nothing between the brake drum retaining stud (jack shaft?) and anything else inside, at least on the LS. Are you sure you put the inner sleeve (the rod that holds the bearings in position) on the right way. The short sleeve end goes into the double bearing and the long end of the sleeve goes into the single bearing. It seems backwards, but that's the way it is. Mine was binding somewhere too until I got that inner sleeve right.

I have to admit that whole left side arrangement is strange and it all depends on everything being together.

The top hat washer in the speedo box also presses right against the inner bearing race on the RS.

Dave,

The washer went between the LH side of the wheel and the RH side of the small stub shaft.

The bike holds current registration, so I thought, why not..........

Geared the bike up a little during the rebuild, 22 on the front and 43 on the rear, about 3,000 RPM at 55 MPH.

The LH cylinder is blowing a little smoke ( oil from rings ), lets hope that sorts itself out, I did put the original rings and pistons back in, they were close to new.

Felt and sounded nice.
