Hello,

My name is Josh and live in Cairns, Australia.

Have just purchased a 1970 Roadster, in reasonable condition.

Here are a couple of photos, what items on this bike are not correct ?, would appreciate any input, thanks in advance.

Where would you recommend I purchase my parts ?.

Who sells the best oil filter systems mods ?.

Has been converted to a single Amal Concentric, which I intend on returning to two and re-installing the air box, tail light is wrong, etc etc. ( as far as restoring motorcycles go this is a pretty light weight project )

Dunno, ditch the grab rail, leave the single carb and ride the shit out of it.

I think the only non-stock part you didn't mention was the headlight ears.

Need a better shot of the headlight to see if it's the right one.

Stock, later Commando oil filter is probably the easiest way to go.

Nice BSA, the Commando will be easy after that.

Yep, all that Dave said. Also, the lower fork yoke setup isn't standard. You've done well.

Where or what does the seat look like? The 69-70 had a halo for the headlamp holder. Don't know if you want to restore the year or as a rider. What are those extensions under the clock holders? What do the clocks look like? 70 also had upswept silencers, same as second sentence. If it runs good, maybe you just want to keep it running?

Headlamp reflector
Handlebars/grips
Handlebar switch unit
Instrument pods (are later long black 73-on type which have been polished)
Headlamp brackets (should be a halo)
Fuel tank (looks like a later steel tank, but I'd keep that)
Grab rail (no rail on '70 model)
Chain guard (later type fitted)
Exhaust system (too low-wrong brackets)
Tail light
Carb
Shocks
Points cover
Various parts are not the correct colour or finish.

Not sure what degree you'll worry about being "correct" as the commando has more aftermarket parts available than most other old british twins - that being said - beautiful Beeza!

Bottom yoke looks like a 69-70 type to me, remember yokes were changed for 71 models.otherwise L.A.B. has covered most things.

RGM in UK sells the complete filter head and parts at a very reasonable price.

Hmmm.... has no one noticed the pre-Commando head? A little tough to see the headbolts clearly, but I believe they are 5/16 so it could be an Atlas cylinder as well. Steel tank (good thing!) and the oil tank cover looks like a later style

I like the Beezer!

I just saw something. What is with the timed breather going into the hole in the front of the central oil tank where the perforated ham can should be? Maybe that is how you stop the 69-70 from leaking there? If so I would like to know that.

How long can we carry this on?

What happened to the instruments? They are splayed out way too far!

Looks like a pretty reasonable bike. Have fun and be prepared to spend lots of bucks!

So it's a bitsa (goes well with a BSA doesn't it?) who will know except the experts. Like Swoosh said, ride the crap out of it, looks good just as it is, at least to 99% of riders.

Thanks for the input gents, when you buy a 40 year old bike, there's a fair chance some moron has done something to the bike you wont like. certainly was the case with the Flash (57 years old)

L.A.B,

I believe the lower pipe brackets are due to the passenger foot pegs, it is in the parts manuals I have.

If anyone would like a copy of the manuals I have shoot me an email: Joshua_Cox1@westnet.com.au , alternatively if you've got something you'd like to share, shoot it through.

Ron L,

It seems you like motorcycles, alot, that is quite a collection, you mentined the head and possibly the barrells might/are from an Atlas, if the bolts are 5/16, then its an Atlas head ?, if it is a combo of 3/8 and 5/16 ? ( 20/30 ftlbs ), then what ?.

Cheers

Josh

Dave[dogt] pointed to the head being Atlas as the rocker feed line mounts are different i,.e. they attach to the top of the head not the side as a commando does but that is not a big problem you have a good bike, i started with some boxes of parts that were only 70% there good luck.

Hi Al,

Thanks, I'm not a rivet counter and am very happy with my new toy ( thanks for the support ).

Its great to have "what is what" pointed out to me, and I'm not taking it to heart :D .

Keep em coming.....

head definately looks wrong don't it, oilfeeds, angle of manifold joint, but who cares unless you want a shiny wankers bike to trailer to shows , get it going ,up grade the factory faults, fit a carrier on the back for your esky and enjoy.

The pillion footrest positions and their brackets look correct (although the rubbers are the wrong type) but the silencer mounting brackets seem wrong, and I don't know which parts manuals you are referring to, but the '68-'70 parts book lists the Roadster 'Silencer stay' brackets as part '061721' (x2).

061271 are the diamond shaped plates, the large plates are part 061720, and the footrest supports, 061722.
