What Did You Do With Your Commando Today?

Went on a 91:42 mi. ride today according to my GPS app. it was 66 F and sunny but windy (21mph gusts). Still it was a nice ride considering the shit weather we’ve been having recently. The bike ran great, I couldn’t be happier with it’s performance. Looking forward to a beautiful summer of riding. Ride safe!

Rode it.
To the pub.
And back.

Removed the 49 year old oil pipes. There were weeps from the tank banjo area, so when that goes back in I'm gonna try a couple of M26 dowty washers (as was recommended on here) and see if that helps.

I have new pipe & clips ready to cut & install, I just ran out of light (and dinner was beckoning!)

Also, removed the bottom shock fittings & checked the s/a for lateral play. It is rock steady 👍

Even so, I have some Kegler clamps, but also a couple of split collars, without the bolt, that I may try first (also as recommended on here).

Looking Good Bonzo.
Original Herringbones.
That's a good photo.
Do we know if that's the original hose routing?

Yep the originals. The new pipes I have aren't herringbone which is a shame. Blimey, seen the price of them? I haven't cleaned these up & checked them yet, but they'll go in the (rapidly expanding) box of replaced original parts.

There's nothing I've come across to suggest the sub 7k mileage of this bike isn't genuine, and I'd put money on most of it being completely stock (when I got it). I'd say the pipes have been on there since it left the factory 👍

EDIT* Original pipes in situ with horn removed...

The earth ring terminal would normally go on the adjacent footrest 'bolt' (hex screw '18', secured by 5/16" UNC nut '20' and washer '19')...

...not between the Zener and the Z-plate where it could potentially interfere with the heat transfer between the Zener and Z-plate.

Live & learn.

Thanks Les 👍

Hey, I changed the oil, put in fresh fuel, kicked it over two times and ROAR! First time since it went to bed last fall/winter. Sweet! I took it for a week spin around the neighbourhood. The RGM/Triumph kickstart lever certainly is easier on the leg to kick the bike over. I'm gonna take it for another longer ride tomorrow to see how it helps with my right foot positioning like everyone is talking about. I'm sold on the lever though. A nice upgrade, for me anyway. Summer (well, spring that is) is finally here in Michigan. Going up to the teens Celsius this weekend and into the 20s C next week. Biking season is here in Michigan...Let the good times roll!

Inspired by the above... Tank back on. Fresh fuel. New battery - Deka ETX-15L. Didn't bother with the wet-sumped oil. 3 kicks. Vroom vroom!
Now to move lawn tractor, snowblower (unused this year) and get it off the stand so I can get some rides in before "The Gathering".
Russ

Excellent work Russ! I had to do the same too man. I summerized the snowblower and fogged the motor and stuck it in the corner of the garage, after re-arranging things. Lawn tractor I moved around as well after putting the deck back on. Now I have a new setup in the garage to accommodate the Norton as a daily rider now that the weather is getting nice here in Michigan.

Triggered a memory. My dad would put our badazz Ariens 9hp snowblower/rototiller/mower in the greenhouse to warm it up in winter. Had a rusted out muffler. very loud. Cat liked to sleep in greenhouse. Was quite a scene one time when he started it up inside the greenhouse haha. That cat left a major dent in the screen door.

Today I decided to convert the power takeoff to a proprietary charging lead (CTEK) instead, something I would tuck under the side cover. I get the bullets on the CTEK lead and go to the bike's 14g leads - and stop dead. Wait, this is positive ground? Do I hook the charger as BRN/PRPBLU > Black (CTEK) and RED > Red (CTEK)? I think I know the answer but do NOT want to fry a harness I spent months building.

EDIT: For correct color, Blue.
