About a 1000 smiles to the gallon,

In the June 2017 Andover Norton newsletter there was a test using an air/fuel Ratio modified to some non standard exhaust pipes to accept a Lamda sensor. What ever became of the results to the testing ? I get the same 1000 smiles per gallon as well.
Cheers.
Tom

76 Interstate 850 .40 over , stock carbs, cam,exhaust system.
Runs great BUT no one seems to be able to help with the set up and then calibration of my new Smiths Electronic Instrument despite many requests so who knows about it's fuel mileage ??.
Cost of shedding /cracking parts from vibrations seems to be my biggest cost to be honest.
I always fill up with the priciest gas I can find.
Because it's an Interstate I can drive and wait to find Shell Ultra without Ethanol content , here in Canada. Stay up floats. Enjoy.

The kit is still with AN, the test was done as a lot of Premier customers complained that they ran too lean, the American made kit said otherwise, they ran perfect. We then had 3 bikes dyno'd and all were in tolerance, this was done to check the American test kit.
The all out curves are not all that a dyno can tell you, it can also be used to monitor response to gear changes, for 50 quid it it is very much worth doing.

I just returned from another northern road trip with 2 fellow riders last weekend, meeting both up in Hanover Ontario. Day 1, This trip went through the lower section of Algonquin Provincial Park # 60 highway to Pembroke. Day 2 up #17 highway above Algonquin to North Bay then to Lavigne to check out our Camping site for the Ontario Norton Owners Norton Rally coming this August. Day 3 back down #11 to #124 to Perry Sound. then Southbound on the 400 back to Hanover. Day 4, I was back home with 1069 miles clocked. Burned 70.85 Liters by my receipts. 1068.9 miles/15.59 Imperial Gallons = 68.58 mile per gal. U.S. converts to 1068.9/18.717 U.S. gal= 57.11 miles per gallon averaged. I purchased High Test/No Ethanol all the way. Used 1 quart of oil.
Weather was great and we fortunately dodged some rain cells. All in all a great ride. I need to now change my oil and filter.
Cheers,
Tom

My 850 roadster with new premiers used to get about 100 miles out of the tank now regularly I get 120 miles just by rubber mounting my carbs

My commando is now back with a single TM 40 is returning 48 mpg but that's very mixed riding
Sustained above 80mph and town riding
I'll check what it does on a run if I ever go on a run!!!!!

That's quite an improvement. Why do you think rubber mounting made such a difference?

How did you rubber mount them?

I was going to ask the same question. phippsy are you using the original Ham Can filter or gone K&N? Pictures?
What is your gearbox sprocket?
Cheers,
Tom

Gone K&N I really don’t no why ,but I sadly keep a log when I fill up etc and the figures don’t lie ,seems a lot more tractable ,tick over has never been so good, RGM belt drive speeds up gearbox

850; Engine is unmodified, and has an unbalanced Peashooter exhaust system and 'ham can' air filter. Using Premier carbs I am getting high 50s to the (Imperial) gallon, which feels like an improvement on what I was getting with the original Amal carbs.

62-64mpg with 35mm FCRs. Modified 750 Norton P11. HWY, town, and twisties, but not sustained 80mph riding. At 80mph my eyeballs rattle too much. ;)

I get a million grins every ride.... So much so that if it sticks I'll look like the Joker.... Don't know nuttin' bout any miles, but when having so much fun I never count how far.

Tens of thousands of cigarettes ago, when mine was only a few months old , i ran it out of petrol and actually had to push it about 10miles along the M1. A calamity best avoided even by you non smokers. Back in the70s after it had been geared up and fitted with its Avon fairing ... 40mpg at a steady 90mph... At a these days -more usual 50-60 mph late 50s mpg.

phippsy, Thanks for the pictures,

why sadly?
I also keep a log of my bike. Is that abnormal? Not for me! I think it is a good idea. If the bike starts doing something out of the ordinary then it is traceable. You can ask the question why? Why is it burning so much oil??? using so much gasoline? My battery was at 12.6V now it is @ 11.6??? Why does my oil pressure drop down to less than 30 psi or 10 ??? oh yea...because its F#U/N +95F and I'm sitting in traffic walking like a duck with my bike going no where fast.... I'm hot and so is my bike....go figure.
Anyway on my last 1/2 mile to my home from my journey, I tapped my tank three times on the left and said, Old Girl... I thank this machine for bringing me back home. I trusted her to do the journey! Would you do the same on your Commando? 1000+ miles???.... put some miles on it! Keep on keep'in on!
Cheers,
Tom
