What Did You Do With Your Commando Today?

Just curious, what brand and type, USA, China, Zimbabwe, and how long was it in there? I guess that's the RLS 9/ aka 1654? 2rs? Did you remove the inner seal if you rebuilt the box? Just wondering, hopfully those Potugezzers weren't up to their usual tactics.

It was a no-name Chinese POS. all I could find last time, hoping to do better this time. I had removed inner seal. That's the seperate, former OUTER seal hanging in after I tapped the sleeve gear through.

I'm sure you know that that's the bearing that will fail, regardless of quality, if you've allowed the primary (belt or chain) to become to tight from rear chain effect.
Exludes Mk3's obviously!
Yes, all good in primary land, belleville washers performing well.
Chain & sprockets like new, flooded with ATF.
I'm always careful to setup the primary chain using the procedure that precludes it. The tension is right where I set it.
In fact, I won't need to disturb it to repair this transmission. 😎

I Came back from our Ontario Norton Owners, 2023 Great White North Rally at Lavigne Ontario at the Joli Voyageur Resort at Lake Nipissing, held there for the third straight year. 763 miles clocked round trip. Started today towards home at 10 am---Got home at 6pm. I got the long distance award for riding my Norton to the event. One other Norton road as well and Paul Thompson's Norton was not running so he road his modern Triumph Bonnie there. All others were on a trailers or toy haulers. We didn't have as many members as last year because of conflicting Mosport Speedway event took many of the members there. Splitting us. We will need to organize events better in the future.
Two gremlins creeped up that happened to me on this trip.
#1: On Friday, I had my Garmin Nuvi GPS leave my X-Grip Ram mount at the handle bars at +70 mph just passing the French River on highway 69 Northbound. I turned around but knew that there was nothing left to salvage. It took a beating but still turned on. Touch screen looked like a million cracks across the face. Oh well, It was old and I didn't loose any sleep over it.
#2: half way home today, my Smith Speedo indicator needle fell off and I had to calculate how fast I was going using my tachometer. Odometer still was counting off the miles.
There is now a rebuild in the near future. What do you expect from a 50 year old smith clock? To be honest, I cared more about the Smith than I did about the Nuvi.😉
Cheers,
Tom

Hi Tom,
I too have a soft spot for Smiths instruments…..mainly cos I spent almost eight years working for their aerospace division back in the UK…..when they had one !
Sorry about the Nuvi though.
Cheers,
Steve

Great ride T. I won the long distance award just before Covid. Wife on back and rain for 3 days , so full hotels in Parry Sound to deal with. Begging worked . My Smiths electronic packed it in today so will investigate . Who needs a speedo anyways ?

Well Stevo,
The Smiths even after 50 years are able to be rebuilt. Electronics....Not so much.
Use it till it breaks and then its over the shoulder into the bin.
cheers,
T

Met my Son in the morning, riding his Speed Triple, rode 2-1/2 hours on tiny roads to our NNENO meeting at the brew pub. (Northwood, NH) We had pizza & held meeting business. View attachment 109097View attachment 109098

I offered to lead a few interested parties on a ride over to Alton Bay , the Southern tip of Lake Winnepesaukee, using tiny roads. (a lot of 300 year old "cow paths" in New England)
And a GREAT ride it was. First trip out with new 520 O ring chain and sprocket conversion. Weather was perfect and bike ran fine!

Bought this off the internet about 5 years ago. KYK is supposed to be Japanese. The vendor only showed the top of the box and the bearing number printed on the side.

Drove it to Elora , Ont. and back . " No access ." to my favorite fishing spot said the man in the suit and his security guard . Gentrification with Phase 3 of 5000 Condos almost completed .
Next trip I'll strap the inflatable boat to the rear luggage rack , inflate it downstream ( public park ) , then row it up . Bike gets covered up today in prep. for a larger trip ( Salmon ) . I'll burn my valid Ont. fishing license in a mini-ceremony as I'll turn 65 .
