Norton 961 Alloy Tank

Bloody ‘get in there’ for British engineering!! There are still craftsmen out there plying their trade - not everything needs to be mass produced in Chiiiiiina! Let’s hear it for Tab Classics and Jon (Ollie, Ferreteer and anybody else involved).

Just got to work out how to get this one past ‘er indoors’!

A bit more info from Tab.

Norton 961 Alloy Tank

Wow.
I was on their site last week but there was nothing for the 961.
Now I see the first tank in the Norton section is for the 961.
They must have just added the new tank after Tuesday or so, great.
So who will be first to buy one, and report back to the forum, with phots of course?
That'll be me ..... And I hope to get it very soon!
The job took a wee bit longer than expected but it was worth waiting for.
The site was updated at the weekend with images of the 961 tank and the accompanying text offers some idea of the work and experience that goes into building them.
So, I spoke with Richard at TAB today and he says they've had a positive response from 961 owners and are ready to take orders. What are you waiting for ...?:)

It does look to be a good product.
I enquired about the factory style filler, i have a Givi tanklock tank bag that i would prefer not to lose, but at this point Monza filler only from TAB.
Yes, I would prefer a flush fit, 'pop-up' screw in cap - but just preference, not to accommodate a tank bag.

Hello Again Jon , Thanks for your efforts to get this tank made ! If any of us was thinking about replacing that plastic tank , Now is the time ! Get your credit card ready , this opportunity may not last forever.

My order is in, approx 10 week delivery time. Choice of polished or prepared for paint, I'm going for polished. Stephen Spencer maybe if you order one we could get a saving on combined delivery.

My SE is a May 2014 build and the first bubbles in the Factory "plastic" tank started appearing within 4 years! Once the first bubble showed up it was less than a couple of months before the top and bottom were covered with them. From my perspective, the sooner the plastic tank is replaced, the better.....especially if you plan on holding onto your bike.

The issue of bubbling is kind of confusing. I know other 961 owners have had similar issues, and the Ducati tank swelling problems are infamous. But my 2014 Sport has never shown any sign of bubbling paint or swelling plastic. I can only guess that it has to do with the gasoline we get here in SoCal. Maybe it has little or no ethanol in it. In any case, I'm not complaining, just curious.

Hey Skiddy, remind me, where are you located? Feel sure we’ve had this conversation so apologies, but I have the memory of a geriatric goldfish!

Brisbane City, western suburbs. Go on you know you want one!
I now have to get a Gardner era Norton decal for he tank. Or does anyone know what a TVS logo looks like? I had a Thaiumph logo made with a red white and blue union jack fading into the Thai red white and blue flag along with a Thruxton logo in fake Thai font but I was ostracised by the triumph club at that time.

Shame only a Monza filler but I wonder if they could fabricate an ALU fairing to match.......

You are right Skiddy I do - gonna place an order tomorrow. We’ll have a look at postage mate but guessing it will be based on weight. I’ll clearly be demanding that mine a little shinier than yours of courseo_O!

Long live Norton - Thai who?

I got my Humpty Dumpty resprayed by a great local guy who created a perfect tank logo which was sprayed rather than using a decal.......

Mines a 13. No swelling or distortion what so ever. Never had that oil in the airbox either.

Hey Skiddy,

Hope that you’re not getting too wet there in Brizzy!

My order is in. I went polished also - gimme da bling bruvver! We can talk about delivery options over the next few weeks but as we are over 100km apart, it may be more hassle than it’s worth even if any saving were to be had.

I also asked about Tabs ability to complete Norton logo and pin striping. I’ll let the forum know what is said.

Is it possible to make this piece of rolling artwork even more beautiful? Hell yeh!

A few more snippets of info from TAB. Lots of interest in their 961 tank from the user community it would seem, so get your orders in if you don’t want to be at the back of a long queue.

I’ve opted for the Monza cap on the right side, as with the original Norton ally tank. This puts the filler at the highest point whilst filling on the side stand - just got be aware not to overfill of course. I didn’t ask about the screw cap option as I prefer the Monza cap; a little more period authentic IMO. The hand built nature will see every tank being unique, so my guess is that you can have whatever filler option you wish.

No logo painting option but they can provide ‘Norton’ self adhesive tank decals, which I’ll use until I can get the logo/ pinstripe done professionally in-country. Guess this will also provide the painter with a template for the correct Norton lettering.

Excellent product and price. Just looked at my old emails and I paid the following for the Norton version in 2018 !
1 x NOAFT - Norton Aluminum Fuel Tank (USA Version) @ $3,499.99

I wouldn't have thought painting would be an option if you've gone for a polished tank. They would be nothing for the paint to take to.
You would have to tell them if you were going to paint the tank..
They would leave the surface matt so the paint would have something to key onto.
