Norton 961 Alloy Tank

@Stephen_Spencer as I mentioned in another thread, that KTM looks like it was hit in the face too many times with an ugly stick - LOL. The KTM Super Adventure S was on my list early on, but chain drive was a strike against it, and I have a friend that had 2 KTM engines grenade on him, so it left me with an ill feeling about them. Others I know love them and have had reliable bikes.

The Triumph is high on the list but not sure when they will hit dealers here, and the newish cross plane crank engine scares me a little. That combined with a bleeding edge electronics package from a British manufacturer.
I agree, the KTM look is very devisive - I like their earlier stuff better. They have a better reliability record than Ducati, Triumph or even BMW though I believe, where tech issue have been uppermost. We bikers are often drawn towards practicality and performance however, very few I suspect would ever buy a bike that they did not like the look of. Good luck with the choice, no doubt you’ll make the right one - all three are awesome bikes. It really is an embarrassment of riches for us ‘modern’ bikers.

Whoops, we‘ve highjacked this thread. To get it back on track, I’d also be very interested in purchasing the ally tank if it came to the market. I pondered the original Norton tank for just long enough for it to no longer be available. I still have some reservations about the look with my black/gold CR that it may look a bit disjointed, more so than the silver bike. I would look at adding silver highlights elsewhere, to the tail unit maybe. Let’s hope it becomes available for purchase.

I also totally used to sneer at big bikes!

For perspective, the 2022 Africa Twin is 45.5 lbs lighter than the 2022 BMW GS (Standard model) before adding any fuel. Not a huge difference. Probably noticeable, but the GS carries its weight pretty low.

The Duc 1260 Enduro is 4 lbs lighter than the GS before fuel. The GS Adventure is 27 lbs heavier than the GS but includes engine guards. And finally, the new Tiger 1200 GT Explorer is 9 lbs lighter than the standard GS.

Gave considerable thought to the Guzzi V85TT as it is 50 lbs lighter than the standard GS before fuel, and can carry 6.1 gallons. And it's Italian!
I agree.

But … you did list the adventure version… and I bet you’ll add luggage…!

And that’s what most folk buy… and do. In fact I was recently told it is THE best selling bike here in the U.K and has been for a while.

A fully kitted GS Adventure (ie with the obligatory hard aluminium luggage etc) is a very heavy bike however you slice it.

Even though I went for the lightest version Africa Twin, I still think it should be lighter! If it was 20-30kg lighter it would be near perfect. But I can’t honestly see how it could be done. I think the weight is an unavoidable function of the design with adventure bikes. Even the new Husky Norden is only marginally lighter, which was a disappointment considering it’s based on the KTM 890.

Anyway, forgive me, back to alloy tanks for 961s…

I fitted an alloy tank to mine (very black 2018 Anniversary job) but I didn’t like it! If I were doing it again I’d either paint it or go ‘all in’ and remove the airbox, change the seat, etc.

The zero fuel GS Adventure is not much heavier than the zero fuel GS if you add crash bars to the GS, and it has an aluminum fuel tank vs the GS' plastic fuel tank, which I prefer. GS Adventure also has better wind/rain protection. I assume the luggage would be a nearly equal weight gain on any of those bikes.

Yeah, sorry about the thread hijack @Jon

Its probably Jon's bike ? Looks good and the rear may be a bit wider for more capacity ? Very tempting to order one now boys !
Hats off to Jon & TAB Classics :) !

Sweet! It does look very nice indeed.;)
I'd like to see photos off the bike from all sides, and a shot of the bottom by the pump flange and battery box area.
Does anyone know whether the "Norton" logo on the factory alloy tank was a decal or a vinyl transfer?

Thats my baby ....!
Sorry I been quiet, everyone - I saw a first pic Friday night, Richards message was 'this doesn't need words'!
I was speechless too, couldn't believe it.
I guess TAB have got their breath back after seeing what they've done and decided to let the world know ?
Make a great 'centrefold' .. and I'm real honoured to be a part of this.

You'll see all that, don't worry.
TAB had already had some cool pump flanges CNC'd ready. No worries.

Anyone got a price yet from TAB for the new tank? Couldn't find anything on their web site yet, or on their FB page.

Ken

What’s the ideal fuel capacity on this bike for you?

Sorry if I let the cat out of the bag. Didn’t mean to spoil your excitement.

For comparison here’s my factory Norton tank. It appears TAB may be slightly larger?
