Fast idle for warm-up?

The Norton transmission is a constant mesh transmission.

The mainshaft, and all the gears rotate when the trans is in neutral -even when the clutch lever is pulled, due to clutch drag. The only thing not turning is the layshaft which is submerged in oil and the sleeve gear. No load or lack of lube there.

I warm up my bike for 30 seconds and ride off easy. Of course with EFI, I don't have to worry about stalling. Jim

Thank you, Thomas and Jim, for the gearbox info.
I didn't realize all that stuff was turning in there while in neutral. And it "explains" why I get such a hefty clunk, putting it in low when I first get going.

So if all the gears are rotating oil is being picked up and flung everywhere?
Good, I haven't been doing it wrong all of these years by popping into neutral at stoplights!
