threaded commando air filters

I currently have the K & N filter, and while not unhappy with it per se, was wondering are there any filters that are single that thread on, that would fit on a Commando running the dual amal setup? Searching, I didn't find anything- except perhaps the offset pancake type .

Am I looking for a unicorn?

I bought a rectangular K&N knock off from British Supply that slides over both carbs and is secured by supplied hose clamps. Tidy, look good too. Give Mark a call.

I don’t know why the K&N NO-0100 seems to have so few followers. Fits in the original ham can air filter housing. Why use a small filter on each carb or even the dual filter that is half the size of this one.
And you don’t need to fabricate another ignition switch bracket.

The carbs on the Norton are to close together for screw on air filters, they work on early Triumphs as their carbs aren't close like out Nortons, velocity stacks will screw on, but the risk of having a fire is higher without filters, how do I know that

Bad idea to solid mount weight even FURTHER from the engine, the carbs stuck on the manifolds already yanks & tugs a LOT on the two bolt flanges as the engine orbits violently in the isolastics.
Versus solid motor mount bikes, where the frame markedly reduced the engines movement.

That's a great choice over the "jewelry first" mindset of tiny single filters. The large air filter is a great design.
While on the subject, why must people shun the most effective filter media (paper) in favor of "rock screens"?

I think the weight question is probably moot- I can't see how to smaller single filters would weigh more than the stock metal filter, logic tells me they would be within few grams of each other, esp when you add clamps.. But thats beside the point- if they can't be fitted, then they can't. And Locktite has been a stable for me for 50 some years.

I don't like the bulk of the K & N and I don't think I'm getting as tight a fit as I should (although I can't detect leaks, I like a sturdier mount) - so since the Amals are threaded, I thought that might be the way to go.

Whats a readily available thinner dual air filter set up? The one referred in post #8 would appear to be even more cumbersome

I can answer this one for me at least. The paper air filters are a real pain to install without damage. K&N filters are very resistant to tearing. Economically you buy one K&N NO-0100 and it lasts a lifetime. This is only my experience over 50 years of Commando ownership. Of course these only work for machines with ham can air boxes. Those with the black plastic ones, your on your own….notice my avatar

I have been unable to detect any performance changes.

When cNw ran out, K&N would not produce more. cNw didn't have any for quite a while. They are now having them made elsewhere and they are just as good or better quality. Still look like the K&N version. If more of us bought them, I bet Matt could bring the price down. He went way out on a limb to have them made. I've bought and used several.

I'm finished with K&N. Three times I've been promised a quote to have a thinner version of the hamcan filters made and three times, crickets.

It's not a question at all. A statement. I stand by it.
Two smaller filters no doubt weigh LESS than the OEM "ham can".
The difference is, that the ham can is mounted to the frame, and connected to the carbs via soft rubber boots.

I simply smeared a small amount of silicone RTV onto the carb threads

One of them has to be modified first''' screw the right had on on fist and mark it with indelible pen where the other one will contact it
I used a Dremel to remove small amount of the filter housing in an arc. refitted it and screwed on the other filter marked it & further, machined it until i could screw it on.... applied a small amount of silicon onto the left carb thread as the right don't need it .... they do look the business
