Hi,
I have a Norton Commando Roadster 850 mk2a 1975 that's fitted with a single Amal carb and the earlier air filter assembly front and back plate that's separated by a large perforated gauze.
This looks like the standard size that's supplied by Andover Norton and RGM Motors. ( Stainless front and back plate and larger perforated gauze )

Looking at the RGM website i notice that a narrow air filter and perforated gauze is also sold to enable easier air filter and carb removal, due to having the extra space and not so cramped.

Does anyone know if both the standard and narrow perforated gauze elements can be used be used with the housing that's fitted to the bike, or do i have to change the complete air filter housing and filter to the narrow set up.

Thanks for any help.

I think it is just a cut down grille and narrow filter element. Rest is still original.
My concern with this setup, you must use their narrow disposable filter, which cannot be sourced here in North America. Having to pay extortionate shipping for a reg maintenance item is against my religion.

Ring Roger at RGM to check but you should only need to change the filter, mesh and the bolts need to be shorter too. RGM have the full kits and also the parts listed separately.

I can't confirm because I haven't used the narrow filter, but in order for the rubber boots to bridge the extended distance, you may also need a couple of these..

EDIT* Sorry, just noticed, you may only need one ;)

On my G-80cs the long tubular AC has a large piece of blue foam that wraps around the inner perforated pipe. I glued the ends together. I have cleaned and re oiled it occasionally. This foam was commonly sold in the dirt-bike world when I bought it. If it's still available could one not make up a similar setup for the Ham Can filter and be done with the paper element hassle for good?
