What Did You Do With Your Commando Today?

I've been working on the back end while waiting for some parts to arrive from RGM.

It's starting to look like a Commando!

Are you waiting for the shock lower mounting washers to arrive as they should be the large diameter 06.7808 (circled in red) that prevent the shocks from sliding off the mounting rubbers?...

...and the shock eye mounted in accordance with the information in the Mk3 manual Section F6 and Figs. 9 - 15, but note the lower shock bush dimension given in Fig. F14 is incorrect. The Mk3 lower shock bush width should be 0.95"/24mm...

"COMMANDO 850 MK3 1975> 543-33004
INTERSTATE 850 MK3 1975> 543-33004

543-33004 13.0 10X19 10X24 [lower bush width] 110/8*"

I suggest you check the shocks are parallel because they probably have the same (19mm?) width upper and lower mounting bushes.

If they're not then additional spacing washers can be added between the axle plates and bushes (see Mk3 manual F6).

Note there are two 06.7808 washers not three (because AN has copied the diagram error) that shows x3 'Item 33' washers but the parts book listed quantity is 'x2' also the apparent 'third' washer does not go between the caliper carrier and the axle plate.

AN appears to have created its own error regarding the two bolts circled yellow in my picture.
More information on that if anyone needs it.

I hadn't actually noticed that LAB, well spotted! I need to sort that before I go any further.

Yeah Baz, I imagine most of you guys have been here a few times, and those that have experienced more than a few have opted to install the electric start...:) That's next on my shopping list for my Commando, or just get the position right next time. I guess somehow I got the stroke wrong and air/gas ignites in the airbox/cylinder and kicks the starter lever back at you. These RGM levers are a little worse for this as they increased leverage for us also means increased leverage for the bike and when it decides to slap you back it really gives a good whack! Anyway, now I know why there is an insistence on solid workboots. I wear Redwing boots usually - I have a few pairs (many actually). But this time I wore a more casual leather boot that I wear around the garage when I'm working.
What ignition are you running...it wouldn't happen to be a pre MK IV boyer by any chance ?

No, I'm using a Tri-Spark. Had one on the last bike and was very impressed with how it ran.

Edit: Looks like your question wasn't aimed at me!

If you still have the MK3 Boyer Ignition box and it kicks back on you.. its generally a good sign your battery is weak..ive never had any kick backs from the MK4' units...hence my original question to Starvingphotog.
Trispark etc have had their teething/mis firing problems also over the years also...in fact ive got a new Trispark unit (given to me) sitting on a shelf and have had no reason to fit it...YET 🙂

You guys building these beautiful shiny masterpieces from the frame up makes me envious! These bikes are so shiny and beautiful! Makes me want to tear mine down and rebuild one of mine as decoration for my office! Of course, I have neither the money, time, or talent to do that so not happening anytime in this lifetime.

I do like the thread about the tri-spark and kickback. Funny thing is that it never kicked back before on me. Maybe the battery is under voltage like one of you suggested. I have the SureFire ignition from Pazon. I thought it was the positioning of the kickstart lever perhaps. I'm still waiting on my foot to settle back to normal before I mount that steel horse again for another go.

Glad it's not a kickstarting bastard....
