What Did You Do With Your Commando Today?

Saw this on YouTube
Ok it's not the best way to go about it ,if I were doing it I'd weld the box instead of bolting it
I would also brace it across the middle and add some wider legs to the base
But I think the idea is sound
Those side lifts are designed to take the weight of the whole motorcycle after all

That's for people who can't weld.

I love my lift table with the wheels on it as when working on the bike on the table it gets a bit hot inside the workshop and pust the lift table as well bike on it out of the hot workshop and under the open awning off the front of the shed where its a lot cooler with the sea breeze coming off the bay, our summers get very hot the be working in a closed shed even with the wide roller door open, my snooker table is also under the open awning, it's a cool place to entertain with a few beers, snooker or working on the bike when it's to hot in the shed.

Was just generally looking over the bike after a couple of short rides at varying speeds and noticed a few dryish oil spatters on the leading edge of the battery cover. Oil seems to be getting blown back from a tiny leak at the front of the head gasket between the cylinders, not too bad at all but I was wondering if this is a common leak point and if the collective opinion is that it's likely to get worse.
Thanks for any thoughts on this.

Could be leaking from the valve cover studs as if they weren't sealed when installing, ccould look like a blown head gasket, you need to clean all old oil off then ride and see where the oil is coming from, blown head gasket might not be as oil can come from places not expected, I been caught out with leaking valve cover studs before.

If it's not that, have you checked the head is fully torqued down. Also, do you have any of the breather fixes? These two things sorted my engine case leaks.

Ashman,
I like all the vines hanging over the entrance to your shed

Passionfruit vine as well a honeysuckle vine for a bit of colour when flowering in our winter, my shed/workshop and awning takes up 1/2 my back yard and the other 1/2 is veggie gardens and fruit trees as well fire pit for outdoor cooking.

During my rebuild I bought a cheap Chinese gas cap for my Commando and I promised a review. The Chinese cap was total crap! It leaked from day one. I suffered for two seasons of riding with fuel leaking if I filled up too full. No more! Today I installed a new cap from AN. The difference in quality between the two is staggering. Should have bought from AN in the first place. The new cap fits perfectly, I’m sure it will seal well. So, if you’re thinking of buying a cheap Chinese filler cap, don’t waste your money. Do yourself a favor and buy the cap from AN.

FE made a similar statement on expensive v inexpensive solutions some time ago. I seconded the motion but I will ruefully admit I have fallen short a few times since to my embarrassment. I often go to AN as they at least try to make good bits.
But keeping on thread, the last tank cap gasket I got from AN doesn't work as it should. Nobody is perfect.

Thanks Baz,
Appreciate your reply but I don’t know what a trolley jack or checker plate is. I am sure I will understand those terms when you get a chance to post some pictures if possible. When the lift is on the lowest level,is it flush with the floor or 8” above as stated?
To set mine into the floor, I would have about a 10” gap along the left side to get to the levers. It is just your basic Harbor Freight model that works just fine but would love to put it in the floor.
Thanks,Mike

Great job Baz. I must say you got me thinking about doing the same with mine
When I cast the base for my new garage I incorporated the pit
Originally I used the ram in the photo to raise and lower the bench
It's from a small tipper truck
I had a 12v hydraulic pump running it but it was very troublesome
So I thought keep it simple and stupid so I incorporated a trolley jack
This works fine but I wasn't happy with the suddenness of the decent
So I used the hydraulic ram as a damper
It runs through a 3mm jet back into the reservoir
So the ramp comes down under control

Thanks for the suggestions, Ashley and Mart, I’ll do some investigating and will have to find out what to look for re breathing mods. Suspect nothing‘s been done in that regard.

I purchased from 2 vendors and they both " didn't work "
I returned to my catalog of gasket sheets and made my own
No more sloshing leaks...or any other kind.

Interstate tank with roadster sidecovers makes the top mount on the battery sidecover a PIA to work with.
New mount via Quik-latch, time will tell whether it was a good idea.
