What Did You Do With Your Commando Today?

Back to one of my favourite spots, lovely to sit up on the hill with the windmill behind looking down on the unspoilt South Oxfordshire village of Turville. This is where the the flying shots for the film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang were taken as well as home for The Vicar of Dibley tv series. There are are host of such villages in the Chilterns with many nice roads to bimble along.

Always wanted to go there!

Is the windmill still there?

75 mile ride today with a friend to Lambourn, home of horse training. 63 mpg😃 Lovely weather and some awesome roads. Then out of the blue, I inadvertently touched my horn button and what the heck? It worked. Not for long though so I was thinking the horn itself was probably ok

Upon my return I checked the wiring in the headlight with a bulb and the switch worked perfectly. Time to test the wiring at the horn so I set to pulling the rear end apart.

Bulb test showed wiring all good so I tightened the adjuster 1/16, nothing. Back and then 1/16 anti-clockwise. Bingo! A dab of thread lock for good measure and then a good clean before reassembly.

Note light cluster hoisted to save unwiring it all.

While you're that far apart why not shift the wiring to a more effective and more accessible place.
I suppose we should be thankful they didn't put it inside the oil tank.

I assume you’ve set the pegs back due to your tank/saddle combo. Can’t say I like the appearance much but I understand the comfort benefits; I certainly wouldn’t want my pegs any further back on my bike my knees are already fairly bent as it is. Not too sure about those snail horns either, I’d rather take the wheel off; all looks a bit busy to me.

Cafe,
I just take the 3 fasteners on the forward part of the fender off and then loosen the ones on the taillight and rotate the fender down so I have access to the horn without bothering the wiring, etc Saves you some time for a lousy job but myself like the way the horn is placed but don’t use it that often.
Mike

I did consider that but with the tyre I have there’s bugger all room to loosen the forward nuts but frankly it was a good opportunity to clean him up to be honest. Now I know exactly what the remedy is, the adjuster, all I have to do is to make or buy a long screwdriver with a right angled tip and I can adjust it from the side without removing anything. At the current rate that’ll be in 2037😂

Had a fun afternoon ride and bike swap with Fast Eddie. Interesting differences between our machines but we both agreed they were more alike than not which in itself is testament to Nigel’s build as well as Matt’s especially considering the technical differences. Long story short, mine has more low down torque and less power up top. Nigel’s, thanks to the balanced crank is a bit smoother whilst mine has a more comfortable riding position. I preferred his more refined suspension though but not his brakes, the rear being, well, absent😂😂😂

It took me a while to adjust to the gearbox being 1 down, 4 up right shift resulting a couple of unexpected downshifts. That TTI box is lovely though, really precise with a short throw. Tyres felt near identical tbh.

One part of today’s outing was for Nigel to try and identify my mystery noise. He never heard it but strangely I heard it on his😱 I swear it wasn’t present before February but maybe I’m just more attuned to my bike. Bottom line is I’m now not worried and will try not to dwell on it. Nice to hear how others hear mine though, feckin awesome.

No doubt we have different riding styles so each has the ‘better’ bike which is exactly how it should be.

Thanks Nigel, and yes, we must do that again sometime soon, maybe on a longer ride, Cotswolds perhaps?

Tis true. I tried riding 101 every way I could to make it make ‘the noise’. So imagine my thoughts when, after explaining all that to Simon he says “but I can hear it on yours”.

Conclusion: it tells us more about our individual hearing health than anything else !

Sure was nice to get a chance to ride a real cNw bike though. Matt does know how to build ‘em.

Both of THOSE bikes make that noise?
So, what exactly does this noise sound like and how do I get my Norton to make it?

My thinking is it’s just a character within the bike’s soundtrack that I’d not originally separated. I ride with Ultimate Ears custom plugs which filter very differently to my previous triple flange plugs. I might swap back next ride to see if the various sounds blend/mask what I hear, otherwise I’m stumped tbh.

Ear plugs, I like to hear the sound of my bikes, if you have proper fitting helmet no need for plugs and having the sweet sound in my ears mmmm.

If, and I seriously doubt, a helmet can fit so well as to protect one’s ears from the noise of both bike and wind, what would be the difference to a well fitting set of ear protectors? Ultimate Ears claim 30dB compared to my Westone’s 24 dB noise reduction, the later of which are for concerts primarily and are filtered to allow a more even attenuation across the frequency spectrum. Even at -30dB and a full face helmet I can hear plenty but my ears don’t ring at the end of a days riding. I spent my entire career, 40 +yrs in the audio industry so I value my hearing greatly.

After 50+ years of riding without ear plugs my hearing is still good, hey what you say lol.
