Norton N15CS Hybrid restoration

Nice slip fit after wetting with 10/30. The top bushes fit real nice, too; I didn't even have to get out my sledge hammer...

The old ones were not trashed real bad, and the fork lower bores were nice and slick.

No, the original balls and races were in excellent condition, absolutely no dimpling or distortion. They fitted up quite nicely and are solid and smooth with zero perceptible play.

I have hit on one of those extremely aggravating situations at this point; there are 3 small countersunk-head screws on each upper fork boot trim cup, that hold them to the underside of the lower yoke. They were removed for powdercoating, and I THOUGHT they got sent in with all the other hardware to be Cad plated, but I've dug carefully through all the bins, and they haven't turned up. So, I'll now have to wait several days and spend more on postage than the value of the bloody screws!

My next couple of shop days will be dedicated to laying out all the powdercoated, chromed, and new parts, along with all thier fasteners, to make sure I include any other bits that need to be on this "penultimate' parts order. Too add to the aggravation, the bloody parts book has NO ILLUSTRATIONS!

No sorry Cookie, N-15 internals are very different looking. They are way harder to find and contain less mistakes than the Commando type. I would have at least plugged the holes halfway up that taper and re-drilled them so that the bottom of the hole just grazed the tapered section. But hey who am I. It could have been so good for so little effort.
Paul since you put in Commando guts did you check to see the effect of such a mod.. The dampener tubes are Commando (later) how about the rods? Have you checked the travel and ride height? You could have as little as three inches travel or more than the 4 1/2 stock travel depending on how the parts are mixed. Check without the springs and do some measuring. G

That one of the most aggravating things about this bike, the parts books have no illustrations.

I'll check the fork travel when I pull them off to install the headlight ears. It looked like more than 4" on the bench (I compressed them repeatedly with lots of oil to get them nice and slippery).

I also have a spare covenant conversion kit, maybe I'll toss it in for grins.

Then that might have been due to an accident at one time and the only parts available were Commando?
I was thinking back to my G15CSR which had full Norton internals while I recall some of the dirt aimed versions had Matchless.

Swingarm bushings insalled, spindle cleaned up, oil felt rings washed and lubed, everything slipped in pleace neatly and spindle cap assembly nipped up, as well as the set pin bolt. Charged with 140# gear oil-

Paint shop is getting down to bare metal on the tank after some serious grinding through many layers of old paint and bondo.

They worked out the big dent real nicely-

They're shifting gears to the Black parts so I can complete the fokes & shocks, and start mounting up as many cycle parts as possible before the engine mount plates get here.

The gorgeous, hand-made custom engine & tranny mounting plates arrived in today's post from Jean in Canada-

Also, the P-11 pipes came in (coincidentally, also from Canada!)-

So, should have the engine and tranny in the chassis about this time tomorrow.

I went ahead and did a mock-up test fit; I need to order all 6 engine mounting studs in 1/2" overlength to accommodate the extra thickness of the plates, and 2 overlength tranny bolts in 1/2" and 3/4" overlength to accommodate the plates and snail cam adjusters

The pipes are definitely the right style

The square footpeg through bolt holes are just a touch too small for the bolt to go through the plates, I'll have to get out the rat-tail file and wear out my arms and wrists tomorrow.
