I was a little torn as to where to post this thread, as yes there is a dedicated restoration area of this forum....but then again there is a dedicated "modern Norton" section, which I think gets the most traffic. I very rarely poke my nose in the restoration section at least. Obviously if this is deemed the wrong place, admin will move it and thrash me for my insubordination...and quite rightly so, what what.

So then, on to the matter in hand. I bought a bike. I bought a Norton 961. This poor Norton 961 though has taken a beating, an undeserved beating....a beating that essentially left her for dead. Smashed up with what looks to have been a hammer and a brick, then dumped under water. Yes, she's bad. The pictures don't really do how bad she is justice. My heart 100% ruled my head on this purchase.
Sold at a salvage auction in Switzerland, she eventually found herself back in the UK, just nine miles from her place of birth.
My end goal with this bike is to bring her back better than how she left Donington Norton in the first place. A second chance at life. She originally left Norton as a black euro 4 Commando, base model with no trinkets. She will be coming back as a manx silver café, with stubby exhausts and all the mods that we in the 961 community deem necessary.
Replating of parts will be done to a much higher standard than original, by using Derby Platers. The frame and other associated components that were originally powder coated, will be blasted, primered (something Norton cut corners on....hence corrosion concerns) and powder coated properly.
Once completed and done her duty in advertising what I can do, she'll be put up for sale (I currently have two peoples names down for the completed bike).
Jonathan Furminger has very kindly lent me a camera etc to record this, and I've been snapping away and filming the strip down....but in the mean time, here's a few pictures to show what I have, just from my phone. Once the camera stuff is polished up by Jonathan, I'll post that.
Currently the rolling frame is down at Motoliner in Kent, but it'll be an easy two months before she's back with me....so next up will be the engine overhaul.

So the next stage whilst waiting for the rolling frame to come back from Motoliner, will be the engine. Full strip down, vapour blast the cases etc, replace the damaged cylinder head and rebuild with new gaskets etc
Given all the talk on rockers lately, now seems a good time to give these the Thiel treatment.

It does look a tad rough! But I’m sure in your capable hands it will be better than new. Another cylinder head could be tricky, and those are some nasty gauges in the side covers. Pretty mindless vandalism. Really annoying!

We know you can do it real justice. Reminds me of a stolen bike or my FXR, after I sold it, that a jealous woman went on with a ball pean hammer! Keep the pics comming

I’m sure you know this already Stu, but those fins could be repaired easily.

Then again, what’s a casting? Ten a penny… those rockers however…!

Cheers...pictures will probably come in sporadic dumps, like this lot, instead of dribs and drabs.

I'll save that head for if needed in the future, as yeah it can be repaired.
Haha yeah shame the replacement head I have is bare, or I could retire 🫣 👀

No corners cut, use the best available. Motoliners reputation proceeds them....minimum two month lead time supports this 🫣

Looks like a fun project,
Got a quite similar find a while back for a fair price. And its driving me crazy trying to find the part numbers !
Mines missing forks brakes, front wheel, rear shocks, and exhaust. rest is fairly in good shape.
Might just swap the wheels for some carbon tbh.

Any luck with parts numbers for those, The parts thread doesnt include what im looking for lol

Replacement cylinder head and engine covers already in stock. I've got most of the parts required in stock.
When the Capri RS registrar, a guy called Len, sadly missed, was around, he was roumoured to have ‘the loft of dreams’ when it came to spare parts. Have you such a place? 🤔😂

Did you find out the reason for all the damage etc ?

This will be great thread looking forward to seeing the progress. Are you planning to use any ‘improved’ TVS parts? Crank? Any plans on ‘tuning’? Camshaft mods? Great choice on colour and i’m Sure you will come to your senses with your short exhaust choice 😉

No, I intend to do this without their parts. This will be an exercise in what is available to current owners from people who have supported the platform since day one. Obviously Ollie's parts will play a significant role in this, along with what I can achieve myself.
The engine is next to be stripped, when I get time, so we'll access that as we go along. Going by the complete lack of stone chips on the swingarm in front of the tyre, its obvious this bike has seen very little use ie below 1000 miles. A couple of pins of the original clock have corroded away, so I'll try and repair that to get it powered up and pull the original mileage from it.
Clock set wise, I'm looking to move away from the VDO units, with a proper upgrade to something like the Motogadget range. I have a Motogadget on my Domi, and thats a bike that never has to be left on charge.
Exhaust choice is to appease the people. I have in stock a full short system and a couple of standard longs.
Will see if I can do something about the shite footpegs too....as no one likes those.

I'm going to assume an insurance job to be honest. I have the keys and all necessary paperwork. It was clearly done a while ago, so may have been a quick get out of the bike when Norton closed its doors.

Yes, that sounds about right. Best of luck with the resto, looking forward to seeing the progression.
