Hi team here’s some footage from the ride on the Norton Commando 750 1968 classic motorcycle so much fun she’s done 200 miles of run in miles super great 🥰 had wanted to go out for run in day 14 today but unfortunately my food intolerance has flared up so it’s a day of watching the xfiles and uploading these clips from last night,

Tried something a bit new with some ride by’s.

Had planned to go to Monyash today but such is life there’s always tomorrow :)

One things for sure I’m getting so impressed by the commando platform absolutely fab bike to ride,

Another absolutely brilliant day with the 1968 Norton Commando 750,

220 miles of run in on her in 14 days, since I rebuilt her from the ground up, running like a dream the Commando platform sure is amazing, massively massively impressed,

She’s actually one of the first 65 ever made by Norton (frame jiged an updated by Norman White an the engine by me with the head by Seager)

Hopefully gonna get a longer ride out in the week into the peaks,

Yesterday on the Norton Commando 750 from 1968 will go down as one of my all time favourite motorcycle trips absolutely tremendous those moments are meant to be treasured forever it was 65 miles in the Peak District on dads birthday with dad on the his modern bike and myself on my Norton Commando just absolutely epic this time last year dad was on hospital recovering from his surgery for his stage 3b/4 prostate cancer,

He’s now got another operation coming up on his mouth in the next couple of months so that’ll probably be his last ride till later in the year,

I just wanna say a huge thank you to everyone that come up talking and chatting it really made both our days an especially dads, we ended up talking for about 4 hours at Monyash with everyone every time we put our helmets on to go someone came up for a chat 🙂 which is great for shy me always love how much of a great conversation starter classic’s are

I should have had more footage but unfortunately my microphone has broke as the cable broke drat just ordering a new one.

After years of me trying as well dad finally had a go on a Norton he’s never ridden a British Bike before an really enjoyed the Commando, an was incredibly surprised at how smooth it was, it’s interesting to hear that from dad with him never having ridden a classic British bike before, as he likes his modern stuff.

300 miles running her in over 15 days lots of short evening rides, an yesterdays 65 mile ride was just terrific what a amazing few weeks just magical,

I think a bit of background on the bikes always interesting so for those that havnt seen my posts I’m in my mid 30s live in Cheshire an I’ve just finished restoring my Commando usually I ride a Norton 650ss as a daily rider so it’s been super interesting comparing and contrasting.

She’s one of the first 1968 Norton Commandos ever made one of the first 65 an I just finished restoring her 5,800 quid later only 750 of that was in engineering including the all important safety update to the frame jigged an updated by the legend Norman white and the rest in new AN parts an she’s now the commando you are watching in the video what terrific fun it’s been 🙂

Who knows maybe I can get dad riding a British bike in the future to more than just a quick go that’d be epic!

Anyone who’s followed me for a while will know I use my classic and vintage motorcycles no matter the weather an even rode my 98 year old Norton 16H the 1927 Norton 16H flat tanker last winter,

So today’s report,

That’s another day of wet weather riding on the 1968 Norton Commando 750 done 330 miles on her an I’m just having the time of my life 🥰 it’s a real gutter I’m having to sell the Commando if it hadn’t been for the delays with dad extra surgery this year to the funds I would have definitely have been doing some trips on her such is life!

I think I’ll have another commando in the future though

What a terrific riding motorcycle!

Ill always remember every single one of these rides on her it’s such a special feeling riding one of the first 65 Norton Commandos ever made what a monumental turning point in motorcycle design they were,

Should be out on the Norton 650SS this week in between dads tests tomorrow and results on Wednesday always nerve racking then towards the end of the month dads got his consultation for jaw surgery getting there slowly,

An once the house move is finished probs by aug I’ve got some medical stuff to attend to myself one things for sure classic motorcycles and travel are my way forward :)

Norton Commando 750 1968 classic motorcycle wet weather ride run in day 17

Hi everyone hope we are all well 🙂 got out on the 1968 Norton Commando again today I decided to try some different microphone positions on the audio as I usually just keep it on my lower chin bar, was fun to try, bikes running awesome sat at 340 miles now over 18 days,

Won’t be any updates now for a few days as I’ve gotta deal with some consultations with dad for his ongoing stage 3b/4 prostate cancer treatment. I’m hoping to maybe take the Norton 650SS out over the weekend should be really fun

Whether you are working on your bike or having a ride have a great week everyone,

Thanks Jan :) hopefully she finds a good home

A none matching 750/850 went last night for £6235 as bids so only 765 diff to mine so least I know where stuffs sitting price wise as there was a lot chasing that, think a lot is location in the country an unwillingness of some to travel.

It’s great to see more commandos other than mine though hopefully going to new homes an getting ridden means continued parts availability for all of us on the future

As that had none of the £5,850 quid expenditure mines had only 750 of that’s engineering by the best Norman White on the frame an Seager on the head and the rest is brand new parts Andover Amal an Trispark at the £7,000 I’ve got her on at inc her being one of the first 65 an triple matching nos’ sure most have seen her on the bay hence mentioning it in the thread, I actually paid 8500 for her before doing the work,

I think what’s not helped is there’s not a massive scene up my neck of the woods our local vmcc section shut, an the nearest is ages away, when i had to let the 350lc go earlier in the year that went down to Cornwall and all the enquiries were that neck of the woods, an my 1150 went further up north by quite a few hours.

Paint job an a few lil year correct Matt chrome bits n it’d be a cool show bike to although I never built it as that just wanted her to ride an enjoy,

I could have actually sold her 4 times over the past month if I’d used a courier but I got scammed when I was younger so won’t do it unless someone’s here in person, especially with my old man relying on me, I’d sooner wait and the right person who decides to travel to view,

I’ve got two open ended buyers if I deliver but with dads surgery I just don’t wanna do that at the moment, but that’s good to fall back on, once we are through the other side, of dads surgery if she’s not gone by then, got a few more enquiries again from down south again this week, so be interesting to see what happens.

I’m trying to keep the mileage sensible haha, could quite easily go out for a bunch of 60-100 mile days , I was in 2 minds today whether just to park her now she’s got 340 miles on an is well proven, until I finally get a viewing / someone definitely coming for her I think I’m gonna keep enjoying her while I’ve got her, on these short rides while I’m able, if I can grab a spare 30 mins in between everything,

Time will probably slow the riding down a bit now as dads got his next set of results on his stage 3b/4 prostate cancer tomorrow I’ve gotta finish the house selling stuff and complete the move and then next week dads got his jaw operation consultation which I must admit has got me incredibly distracted now as there’s a lot of risk to it, due to the meds, all fingers crossed,

Also wanna get the 650ss ready to rock again as I’ll be using her as my only transport, once the commando is sold an the WD16H is nearly done to that should be so much fun to take Normandy next year,

I’m just in the process of selling our Honda nx500 to a dealer an some other stuff so that’s took the pressure off, an a rs125 that I’ve stored since 2k miles in my bedroom looking forward to getting that back down the stairs!

What’s hard is I know I’ll want another commando in the future been having a terrific amount of fun an I’ll wanna spend the same money again to do what I did on the engine, electronics and fueling side of stuff, so I’ll be back to spending way more than I’m letting mine go at again,

Only thing we can do in life is keep moving forward one day at a time, I love my motorcycles and the commando was in my never ever sell prise it out of my hands category but sometimes in life other things have to take priority,

Just glad my shoulder improved enough for me to be able to kickstart bikes again would have always regretted it if I hadn’t been able to, so glad I got to experience her after all the work,

Memories to treasure for sure n even with dad riding in the car with his jaw issue following still out making memories together which is fun!

Agreed. I’m flabbergasted that this hasn’t been snapped up by now. Was very tempted myself and the last thing I need is more bikes right now, but this one is just such a beauty!

It is obviously no reflection on this bike, it is an indicator of the dire state of the market (ergo general economy) right now.

Nevertheless, this should get snapped up, it’s a beauty and a bargain… and it’s also now quite famous !

IMO you should keep riding it, folk will not be put off by it having a few hundred more miles on it, in fact they’ll see it as good proof of its mechanical condition.

But… IMO only… I would refrain from riding it in wet weather if I were you, doing that very quickly turns it into just another used Commando rather than a showroom fresh just restored example.

Thanks mate really appreciate the comments an yep I totally agree, I definitely think location has a huge thing to do with it as well, I’ve been in the unfortunate position where I had to sell most of my bikes last year an every one went down south bar one which went right up north 0 locally,

Who knows hopefully I can kickstart a local classic scene with riding the Nortons again certainly getting plenty of conversations of people coming up from all ages quite a few younger riders who are on l plates and just past there tests asking what it’s like to ride a classic :) taught quite a few people now how to start a British bike with her which has been super fun,

Yep that’s a good point on the wet weather riding, took some polishing the other day haha!

Just gonna replace the oil lines on the 650ss tomorrow as they’ve gone a touch hard with being stood with the shoulder problem I had

They say bikes are bad ya wanna try old figure skating injuries + decorating the house lol never imagined that’d lead to such a nightmare

Least it’s back to full fitness now :)

then can use her as usual on the wet weather days an the commando on the dry ones while I’ve still got her,

the 340 miles I covered on the Commando will go down on memory as some of the best I’ve ever experienced on a classic British bike utterly superb, what a quantum leap of motorcycle design,

Had my first short ride on the 1967 Norton 650SS again tonight she’s back to daily riding duties as I no longer have a modern bike to, few changes I wanna make this week to get her sweet an ive gotta dial myself back into the pre commando vibration I’d certainly have another commando in the future,

The 650ss had done 4 winters and 4 years in the past so she’s well used to it,

Now it’s time to make the 650SS the best she can be with a few modern updates based on what I’ve did upgrade wise on the commando

Well everyone I feel like I just rolled back the years! I’ve gone full circle right back to where I started my Norton 650SS! My original classic daily rider which did 4 years n 4 winters

Quite an emotional day the commando going to her new home to the next generation rather than put my 650ss away after a bit of work on her today I decided to ride her an go have my dinner :)

This week I’ve got a few bits coming inc some new front shoes, an a couple of other little bits,

An that’s what it’s all about people keeping these iconic motorcycles saved riding enjoyed sharing the benefit for your mental health bringing these bikes back to life just transforms how you feel so visceral so amazing the pleasure in a digital world of an analogue motorcycle just oh gosh just so special!

I decided to do a bit of photography tonight with my Hasselblad H3Dii-31 and hc 80 I couldn’t afford any more lenses for it so just using the kit lens since I bought it years ago, an tonight for me I was really happy,

May I present picture 2 Norton meets E Type

for those that know about digital medium format, you have no motor drive it’s all about timing all about the skill the instant split second moment captured a single image no do overs, the split second between being able to read the Norton logo and not just one of those lovely moments,
I noticed the e type coming braced to reduce mirror slap n got a slower shutter speed.

In many ways this reminds me of a Norton that special moment the moment we treasure in such a busy world an opportunity to treasure each moment,

So what’s next as you all know I sold the commando to free up some funds to finish the move same with the nx500 and now the 650ss is my daily rider again,

After the move I’d like to explore something different a classic Triumph I’ve had modern ones inc a ex iom tt race bike but never a classic,

At the moment I can’t see myself getting a modern bike again if I ever feel I need anything more modern again itl be another classic commando :)

Nice happy ending.

And a happy new beginning for the new custodian !

Now, tell us more about your planned upgrades from the SS…

Totally mate I’m really happy she’s found a new home with a great custodian who’s already a brill hand on the spanners which is excellent I was made up it’s gone to someone even younger than me with all the doom and gloom about younger riders not getting into them it’s nice to see that’s not the case, know a lot of people who’ve recently gotten into classic British bikes my age an under so that’s absolutely epic to see hear about it a lot on my YouTube an Instagram,

So for the 650ss there’s a bit of remedial I wanna do,

I’ve just give her a mini service an sorted one of the slides that was slightly gummed up so today’s ride should be way way better the 650ss has always been incredibly sensitive to balance between the two carbs, on the slides so sorted that,

First thing I really really wanna do is get the slimline replica rear mudguard drilled for the seat and chromed, dying to see that fitted just gotta sort a chromers I still would have loved to have found an original one

decoke at some point,

I wanna get the upgraded throttle slides for the new monoblocs I fitted,

New shoes from Andover, new tyres,

I’m gonna renew the oil lines and control cables as a matter of course,

Few bits to repaint after all the winter riding

Upgrade wise i wanna get my hagons refreshed as they are due for it an re sprung for my new weight

I really wanna get the powder coat off somehow and paint her normally,

Maybe a slightly higher rise bar but not as high as I had once,

Keep weighing up an electronic ignition and new loom that’s the one thing I’m mainly thinking about as I was so impressed with the tri spark on the commando if I did that I could get the mag rebuilt then

Main thing is not to loose any downtime on her as I’m using her to do everything on as the modern bike is got for dad went last week as well while he’s not riding this year with more surgery,

I also keep thinking as well I’d love to try some engine upgrades, keep looking at all the js motorsport stuff.

not for more power not bothered about that but for smoothness she’s already smooth for a dommi’ but I’d love to put my own stamp on her without altering the looks as I love the standard looks, but make sure whatever I do is easily reversible

That all requires money though which I don’t have at the moment lmao hence the commando sale, something for over winter maybe when I’ve brought another bike in,

Just do the remedial service work and rear mudguard for now

Oh yep an new fork shrouds to get rid of the indicator holes, new rubber tank mounts, black front mudguard stays,

I’m still hoping I might turn up an original rear mudguard that’s nice to fit,

Planning on getting the WD16H running next really wanna take her to all the events on the continent next year,

Been out on the flat tanker a few times just without the camera running sweet :)

The next bike I thinks gonna be a tr6c or t120c,

After that I’m kinda split between getting another WD bike or a commando will see what space we end up with :)

Be careful with your dreaming… that list has all of the hallmarks of turning into a full blown / full spec / full cost resto mod !!

IMHO, I’d try and keep that bike as a good rider.

Although, and I shouldn’t say this and pour fuel on your fire, I’ve long thought that the already sweet 650SS would be enhanced greatly with ultra light JS pistons and rods … 🤔

Funnily enough, with your thoughts turning to Triumphs, I bought some ultra light JS carrillos and billet MAP pistons to try and get similar benefits in my ‘68 T120, but that build has slipped a rather long way down the priority list it seems.

That was exactly my thinking a few choice JS bits :) eventually but that’ll be for next year main thing now is just to get her settled in and back to daily riding, seeing she’s now the most modern bike I own lol.

That sounds nice on the Triumph :)

Although my taste is making cheques reality can’t cash on that aspect, of resto mod updates for the 650ss house move first then can turn her into my dream resto mod 650ss build,

Did a short test route today few lil things to sort running wise as the 650ss is not quite where she was yet, when I put her away with the shoulder problem for a first shake down not to bad, gonna go over the timing tomorrow as it feels slightly off more vibes than usual above 3k from memory an I wasn’t to happy with a plug chop compared to her usual self, as in the past was always spot on,

Initially I suspected main jets being partially blocked so double checked again and was spot on not blocked on either,

On full throttle plug chop lh is slightly fouled / on the verge of going right colour and rh is slightly lean so gonna get stuck in tomorrow and check the mag/ mag timing, as it’s definitely not fuel related, I am gonna replace the inlet gaskets though as they’ve been on there for years just as a matter of course.

I do know in the past I was having an issue just before I had to park the 650ss with the shoulder with hot starting on hot days, so if I keep the mag as the way to go an get that rebuilt as it’s due, I might look into the condenser mod to get it accessible on the side of the road,

Was a good shake down though considering how long she’s been stood just gotta work through all the stuff an get her back to how I had her before the old figure skating shoulder injury reared its head,

Good news is she’s firing up first kick still

If the timing checks out tomorrow I’m thinking I’m gonna be suspecting the condenser maybe as when cold it’s still got a cracking spark on it,

I’ll check it’s not arcing at the points tomorrow as well, at the hospital back end of the week with dad for his surgery consultation so can do a bit before then,

First step is diagnosis then sus out which direction to take the ignition system whether to go electronic ignition or stick with the magneto,

Also the charging system isn’t charging the battery verified with a full battery that drained so gonna check the stator/alternator out tomorrow as well as from memory that was an original one :)

Feels good to have something to mess about with and diagnose if anything haha!

Once I’ve got the 650ss settled this week, next week I might get the 1927 16h out for a few rides she’s all ready to rock an I’m just trying to source some lever abutments for the late type WW2 levers on the wd16h

FWIW my vote is to keep the mag !

I’ve just been pricing things up will have to for a while gonna go over everything tomorrow see if I can get her back to her usual self :) an order the bits for the charging system to get that working again if so,

Ok team here’s the first video out on the 650SS from the other night she’s not running her usual best yet an I think I found the problem last night the points gap is out between the ramps by 0,003” and there’s scoring + wear on the cam ring,

I’m thinking the new plan is to rewire and go to electronic ignition with a tri spark, sort a original rear mudguard or chrome the noc replica I got

No more Norton Commando - Norton 650SS daily rider returns

so team,

Vintage motorcycle workshop day ^_^ owning a 1927 Norton 16H with patina is always an incredibly fine line to walk between cleaning and to much cleaning, to re plate or not to plate, she actually got ridden quite a bit last winter to!

There’s a few bits on her I’m totally confused over what to do the down pipe for one and exhaust system and the bars, decided to just get the heavy corrosion off from all the winter riding on the bare metal bits, and she’s looking way better, a few friends who own pre war Nortons said I’m done for if I go over restoring 😅😅😅 when I got her she actually had the original hand grips (which I took of for safe keeping and she’s also got the optional bars for the year)

Riding the 1927 with no cameras and this morning really picked my mood up sometimes it’s nice just to get out clear your mind ^_^

She’s running an absolute treat I wanna make a slight change to the timing tomorrow so itl be preset on full advance on the lever, after the testing I’ve been doing, gonna be some footage coming this week when my spare top up oil comes :) (she runs total loss)

I’ve got a few bits coming for the 650ss from Andover Norton tomorrows job on that is to replace all the gaskets on the carbs and inlet, while I’m doing that to, I want to really fine tune the float height on the monobloc’s I’ve got some shims coming for that and also some new oil, for her and the WD16H,

Id already had a go at that but with the shims I’ve got it was under or over, so gonna do my best to get it where I want if I have to I’ll make some new shims myself,

Speaking of the WD16H I just need to get the lever abutments for the late type levers somehow and I can finish the control cables,

So that’s an update on my 3 classic and vintage motorcycles from a collection of 16 to 3 and now I’m committing myself to the single cylinder bikes for the future ^_^

Initially I thought about getting a Triumph but with the cost of stuff now days after the rebuild I did on the commando I’m thinking I’ll stick to the singles and keep the 650ss as my twin cylinder bike,

the next one something different a Bullet, Matchless or Velo and a go at pre 65 trials an maybe a few reliability trials itl be interesting to experience some new things!

Did a bit more work on the Norton 650SS this afternoon after a phone call consultation for dads next lot of surgery next week,

Decided to get the nominal fuel level dialed in better on the new monoblocs that I fitted on the 650ss a bit ago,

Tomorrows job is a check over the clearances and an oil change then a short rest ride for lunch and some shopping I think

Mainly Been flying about on the 1927 again :) some pics n footage to come on that next week,
