Norton 1927 16H Flat tanker a preservation restoration

Thanks Eddie :) hope you are keeping well,

Indeedy I kept thinking what do classic motorcycles mean to me an in a way saving them saved me đŸ„° so that's what the new pages are about now talking more openly about mental health an some of the personal battles I've faced.

I've actually had a few messages from people who read me blogging my ups n downs on insta an how I got past the recent setback an they said it really helped them n that's what life's about helping each other as much as we can.

Still got the n.r pages on insta an YouTube but im gonna be posting new videos on the new channel an insta which after the move when I can afford a computer again will be a different style :) an more workshop based an the nr pages are for quick mobile shots an chatting away out on the bikes. Thought I'd just start again on those rather than change the nr ones so those are more archival now on there as there's memories of me with family.

Speaking of which about the house move in January all being well I should be living up Scotland.

An I'm hoping next year to maybe look at a few more WD bikes as I can kick them over that arnt Nortons an I'm also thinking about a Shovelhead electra glide, with electric start n kick an maybe letting the 1150gsa go for a evo electra glide although it's another big bike they are alot lower to the ground so don't exasperate the nerve issue.

The nerve injury is something I've gotta live with now unfortunately as it got found to be two things one of which is a wisdom tooth that's hooked on the trig nerve it was impacted an when it broke it relieved the pain by about 85% so the dentist surgeon altered the tooth slightly when they repaired it so it's got room to the other tooth.

Problem is after the specialist looked at it they said there's an 80% chance that the removal would paralyse the side of my face, so the choice was made to leave it as I'm having more good days than bad. We also sussed out that me kickstarting the 650ss as a daily rider was causing the flare ups. With that out of the equation its miles better which makes it more than manageable. So she's become a high days and holidays bike 🏍 after 4 years n 4 winters of daily riding.

So that's had Me completely rethink my plans for bikes going forward :)

So if it’s Trigeminal Neuralgia I have been battling that myself for a while now . Initially it was thought to be Temporal Mandibular Joint disorder. Currently I am taking Gabapentin nerve blocker and it has really helped me - makes you drowsy but that beats being in pain .
I hope you get well on all that troubles you .
Cheers - Richard

All good here mate thanks.

Sorry to hear of your nerve troubles, but at least you’ve identified some of the cause and effect, and can now adjust accordingly, so things should get easier.

Be careful discussing Harleys on here, you’ll bring out the Harley Hate !

They can be great bikes though. Just take care regarding the weight, some are MUCH heavier than others. If you’re looking at Evo era, a Softail would be my recommendation, not so heavy and quite low, so low C of G. For Scottish roads, I’d advise against the ‘touring chassis’ bikes. Tourers are just too big and heavy for what you need up there mate. If you don’t know what I mean about ‘touring chassis’ do a quick google about Harley chassis platforms and you’ll see what I mean.

Evos were a real game changer (and life saver) for the MoCo. They’re super reliable, but no so fast. If you want faster, look at later twin cam models, still tons of character and fabulous to ride, but more go.

The newer big twins, M8s are even better in many ways, but some (inc me) feel they’ve lost too much character.

Sportsters can be great fun too. But IMO they don’t have quite the same riding appeal as the big twins.

Anyway, best of luck the new life direction, inc Scotland.

Thanks Richard an Eddie as always superb info
An advice.

I've been quite liking the early shovelheads especially in high fi magenta for an electra glide, your TC looks ace :) I've just been working my way through all the Petersen books on the different engines thousands of pages to read.

Yep thats the only thing that causes me pause is the weight one thing that's a pain on the 1150gsa at first it wasn't an issue but it's irritating me a bit again now lol. It's a shame speaking about modern bikes that I ended up with a Friday bike on the Himalayan.

Unfortunately the roots of one of the tooth is on the nerve so they said if they remove it 80% chance of it paralysing one side of my face, so the choice was made to faf around with the top of the tooth n the one infront of it as no one's gonna look at the back of my mouth that's given it a bit more room luckily as it was hitting the tooth infront woke up one morning to part of a tooth on my pillow an in way less pain then they sussed out what had been happening

an same as you Richard at first they couldn't figure out what was happening just that I was in a ton of pain.

It's been alot better since i changed a few things my pillow (a secondary that I had) an stopped kicking over the 650ss multiple times a day as that was setting it off a treat. Gentle walks have helped alot to.

Since I've made those changes it's been way more manageable still have the odd bad day with it on the whole though its been alot better I'd say 15% of the pain it was. To top it off I also had an issue caused by a nurse joys!

Way better than it was though I'll tell you one thing when you get your life's passion took away you don't half feel grateful to get it back I'm just over the moon every time I ride a motorcycle or spanner on one.

I'll cherish the memories of daily riding the 650ss for 4 years n 4 winters but now she's gonna be the occasional day mount so I can continue riding.

The flat tanker was a revelation before the 2nd lot of mag troubles such an easy motorcycle to start compared to the twins.

Itching to finish the WD16H this week an get her into daily riding.

So looks like it's all change and alot more long stroke single cylinders in my life :)

The low CoG of a Harley makes a huge difference. Pushing mine around in the shed is easier than my Africa Twin was, and Africa Twins are about half a ton lighter than a GS !

Also, have you considered one of Hinckley‘s plethora of offerings ?

Or, being a Northern lad, what about messers Clews
?

It's funny you should mention Triumph an CCM.

A few of my mates have got the old CCM army bikes an love them.

I've had a 865 bonnie in the past 2010 era an I absolutely loved the comfort an the engine but the gearshift was not my cup of tea after the amc gearboxes. Dad an I have rattled through a few modern bikes as he's moved off the superbikes.

N tell me about it weight wise the 1150 gsa holds its weight a bit on the high side. The 1150gs height new suspension an centrestand I fitted makes a huge difference to the manageability though flat footable.

We've just been wondering round the local superbike factory as dad's bikeless at the moment after his ktm was rejected, it was interesting seeing what caught our eyes both liked the Guzzi v85tt I liked the Enfield still. Should be interesting to see what modern bikes we end up with next year as I always like to keep one eleccy start bike in the stable now if I'm not up to kickstarting.

Itsa shame Norton dropped the 650s otherwise I would have bought one especially at what they were pitched at price wise.

I'm also waiting to see the triumph 400s an the new Himalayan, although after the issues I had with mine I think the idea of one with more technology worries me a bit. An I think they wrecked the looks on it compared to the 410 everyone's taste is different though so something for all of us.
