Although I've already violated the authenticity of my '75 850 Commando, so well put together by John Ebert,
Any advice replace the ancient headlight I would like to replace the ancient oil burning Lucas headlight with a halogen type headlight.

Any advice?

Most any 7 inch headlight reflector will fit. Hella, Bosch, Wipac and most others will not have a pilot light hole. This is not a factor for most people as they don't use the pilot light anyway.

I have found a couple that came with a pilot light, but I don't remember the brand.

You will need a lamp connector for an automobile (available at any auto parts).

This is one of the best mods you can make for any brit bike, however, make certain your wiring harness and alternator are in top shape if you live in a state where the headlight must be on at all time.

Mine is equipped with a Wipac and does have the pilot. I can't tell you where I got since my MKIII already came with the conversion when I bought it.

Hella and Bosch are always a good choice.

Wipacs

You can get them from Seven Enterprises Ltd. www.7ent.com
We sell them for vintage Mini Coopers and they only come in pairs, so find a buddy who wants to make the change. They do have the Euro pilot lamp built in. Bulb is 55/60W. Search for item S4699B under products. Under $100 for a pair.

Or you can go to Napa and buy the sealed halogen beam plus a plug for about $15. Mine works great and doesn't kill my charging system (though I only run the headlight at night).

one more question about this mod... does this mean that the headlight bucket should remain and just the innards (lens/glass/reflector) swapped out of it?

= Yes.

I went one further, the glass on my halogen was flat, I like the look of the original "bug eye" so when the flat glass was cracked this fall (don't ask how  ), I finished it off with a good whack and (carefully) pried it off the reflector. I then bought a repro headlight on sale and pried off the front lens. (Not too hard to do - but wear safety glasses!) I then glued the old looking glass onto the halogen reflector - now I have the best of both worlds! Light and bug eyes!
