Hey Nigel, thanks mate that sounds great. Some dodgy weather on and off but Sunday morning or Monday looks safe. I think you’ll hear best it if you ride it, I’m happy with that if you are.

So what was the verdict on the mystery noise, or was the ride cancelled?

Another day another leak🤣🤣🤣

Came back from a 50 mile ride and look what I found. This one was dead easy to track down and just as easy to fix thankfully but it might, just might be the source of the noise after all. Actually yesterday’s ride was the first in a while when I had a bit of WOT fun and thought at the time that performance wasn’t quite as it could be but put it down to warm air.

Sleeve nut gone!!! So it’s obviously been loose for a while.

That noise started February, the last photo that I took where it was visible was in late January. All subsequent shots it isn’t clear if it’s missing or the angle is hiding it.

After I’ve replaced it I’ll re-torque them all.

Cafe,
The gods are with you in finding this at home after all the trips you have been on so far!

Which nuts do you have, standard or cNw ?
Thankfully standard according to Matt. He now has his own but they’re too recent for my bike’s build date.

I intend to ride (on another bike) to AN tomorrow and pick one up and the ‘bent spanner’ for the middle one and some other bits and bobs like a sprocket puller and a box spanner for the loose drive sprocket issue I have ready for when I tear down the primary.

What’s your view on my hypothesis about ‘that noise’ and possible power loss? I’m assuming with this nut missing I’ve lost some compression. Low down and mid seem ok but top end was a tad tardy I thought.

I’ve also ordered one of these to assist in the job as long as I can use it in situ @ 90 degrees.

I’d be surprised if it’s the cause of any noise or power loss, I think there’d be more visual evidence of gas blowing out if that were the case. But hey, stranger things have happened, and you won’t know until you try it.

I doubt there’s anything wrong with your top end performance, it’s just that your brain hasn’t yet re calibrated after riding mine 🤣

I suspect it’s been gone for a while. I haven’t been riding hard much lately, <5k rpm so maybe yesterday’s blast just pumped it out some. In many ways I’m pleased as it may answer some questions

I have CNW 012…been back to matt to bring it up to what his current build standards were when he stopped building numbered commission biked I got the bike and it has sun shoulder less rims turned and machined hubs with buchannans stainless spokes
With the white diamond they clean up and look like chrome
No pitting no corrosion

Hey guys,
What is this bolt/nut arrangement supposed to look like. I'm having trouble piecing this together so that I can check my bike. Also, Simon, is this part of the block in the middle-back of the bike or somewhere else?

Oh nice! Thanks for this. I'll have to check this out on my bike when I get home. Honestly, I don't recall seeing these at all on my engine when I've cleaned it. Most likely I've just looked passed them and not noticed. I'll be sure to notice this time round!

Looks like your barrels need a bit of a fresh up, a wire brush to remove any lose paint and rust and a new spray of heat proof paint, if you cover everything up you don't need painted can do while on the bike, the paint will cook on when the motor is run after it becomes touch dry.

I had considered that tbh but assumed they’d need to be off. It’s only the front where the previous owner who lived on the coast obviously didn’t keep on top of the salty air damage.

Frankly the left header is worse but only on the inner/front most so doesn’t really notice but I do so I’m replacing them come the winter. All the aluminium was pretty grey too but I managed to get that all back to 80% of Matt’s original, heck I’ve won 3 competitions already even after riding the wheels off🤣🤣🤣

Why are all my photos loading rotated all of a sudden?🤬

Some good news for a change🤣

Having replaced the missing sleeve nut yesterday which I guessed the torque and only used a very short spanner to limit leverage the leak has gone AND so to has ‘the noise’! 🥳

After a 90 ride to a bike meet near Box Hill, Surrey where I heard nothing using my new full face I donned my open faced upon my return whilst the bike was nice and hot so I could use a little WOT, nothing at all. So it was either the nut resonating or fart out of the barrel/head joint or both. Either way I’m glad I wasn’t mad after all and that my ears still function correctly 🤣🤣🤣

Of course I have a reasonable amount of gear oil after I thoroughly cleaned him down yesterday but being thick it’s easier to clean up.
