I fitted one of the single K&Ns to both carbs. The breather was routed to the oil tank as normal and then out to the back of the bike.
I did go up a couple of sizes on the mains (I tried 240s and 250s). Despite my best efforts playing with jets, needle position and slides, I always felt a hesitation when taking a bigger handful at large throttle openings. It was possible to disguise it but never lose it completely.
The best option for me has been the 750 style air filter - an efficient filter and clean carburation. Still a bit fiddly though.
