So I heard an ugly rumor the other day that I was somehow in competition with people selling Norton parts.

I wanted to let you know that this is simply not true. I make my income by doing machine work -mostly for CNW or others needing cylinder head and other small part reconditioning.

I also build a very few special engines -mostly for racers -but this hardly pays minimum wage when you account for the hours involved.

I am a Coventry, Webcam, Carrillo and Kibblewhite dealer -but I generally only stock enough parts to keep my own building needs supplied. I sell very few of these parts beyond what I install as part of my rebuilds and modifications.

The few parts that I do design and supply are parts that I have found where not suitable for my use from other sources. There again -most of these are sold through CNW. Jim

and having your fantastic hydraulic clutch and head steady, I am mighty glad you do what you do JIm

+1. In addition to that you are a tremendous asset to the Norton community. Keep on doing what you are doing.

Anything one does for fun and profit is competition in modern society. So-called "free marketers" are always trying to beat everything down to the least common denominator and drop the checkered flag on the race to the bottom. It's good to know that some people do and demand quality workmanship as opposed to mass production and bottom line business. Keep up the good work.

I will say , keep up the good work Jim .... and we all know what rumors are .... bulls..t .... and you should ignore them , I will ,as will any who have dealt with you ...

Dear Jim
By your own admission you are in competition with other people who do machining work. You evil, dastardly man!
I'm kidding of course. Just ignore rumours from small-minded people. Your depth of knowledge of Nortons and engines in general which you are only too happy to share for free is greatly appreciated by the folk on this forum. Stay above the rumour mongers.

Is this a great country, or what?

"Live and let live".

Anyone who has a problem with competition in business, has a problem of their own making.

I'm not sure I understand the problem. Can someone explain it to me?

Jim, thank you for all your free information you give us. Is that wrong too?

Well, I have one of your engine case breather valves that screws in the bottom of my 850 and in that case it is very clear you have no competition in making such a fine part.

Do I feel bad for buying computer parts from Newegg instead of Best Buy?
Newegg had great online support. Best Buy has shoe salesmen trying to make a commission off clueless 'consumers'.

Do I feel guilty buying from Fred at Old Britts instead of my local Brit bike repair guy who knows relatively little about Nortons and gives me no info?
Fred has posted tons of great docs and diagrams that have helped me thru the repair / upgrade process.

IT'S a FREE COUNTRY and capitalism with all its fault still works pretty well.
I believe we should support those that deserve it.

Jim - I echo the above comments and wholeheartedly endorse your sales of excess inventory, or whatever else you wish to sell.
Much appreciate all you do for this Commando Community.

I thouhgt competition was supposed to be a good thing?

i guess it isnt always when your getting beaten... LOL

Competition implies that there is someone else out there doing what you do. Frankly I just don't think there is short of the common repair work. No one that I know of designs and builds the things you do which isn't to say that there aren't other great people out there doing work with Nortons, of course there are. I have a bunch of parts that you've designed and built on my 850 including my head with you completely went through and worked over. I could've sent that head out to someone else and it would've been OK but not exactly the way you did it with the Harden bronze inserts and exhaust thread repair etc. but considering that someone had already done those repairs years before I had it and it still needed to be read done by you kind of shows the quality of other peoples work out there... You're part of a community but not in competition.

+1......quality part indeed. Your selfless posts here of the spintron and the info it provides, the. Cylinder head flow testing that became the Fullauto, the camchain tensioner, the posts of your crankshaft balancing etc...etc...etc... all quality stuff from a fellow enthusiast that moves to action instead of just tapping on a keyboard. Please continue creating, producing, sharing & offering your innovations. Cj

As a supplier I can confirm that this asset to Norton has only purchased a few cam chains for competition.

However with his knowledge I would have thought the Norton community would be happy for him to
trade. I have not heard the rumors but the same thing happens here. There are a couple of dealers
I will not supply.

Keep up the good work mate

Andy

PS I would be more than happy to supply all chains as I currently sell to USA only to individuals

Jim Comstock is without question the most technical Norton person out there today. We're lucky to collaborate with him on many projects we have going at any given time. He's selfless, and will happily pass his wisdom on for others to benefit. There are reasons Comstock (and NYC Norton, and many others) use certain suppliers and components that have worked reliably for us for many years, and reasons not to use others that have not.

Unfortunately, it is known in Norton builder circles (and quickly coming more and more to light to the general public) there is a certain product supplier here in the US that can act like a paranoid child, who panics if someone recommends anything other than his kits. Fortunately he has provided us with some very well documented shady tactics and nasty practices as backup. It's a small world we travel in. Tread lightly, do good, and keep your head up!

Jim, I'm quite sure you can hold your head high with the services, paid and unpaid, that you provide to the Norton community.

I really don't understand the issue here though, we all live and operate in free market economies and are free to choose what we buy and from whom.

My recommended course of action would be to politely, and firmly, tell this other gentleman to f*ck off and mind his own business.

Who is the mystery person who is doing the complaining? I for one am dying to know.

I think that answer is just best "left to rest."

I shouldn't let it bother me. Jim
