Well not the test I wanted! More a test of me!
I set off Friday & 3 hours into my journey in 30 degree heat, lots of queuing & loads of traffic, the van warning light came on & flashed "check engine" at me. I had just got out of a 5 mile queue & had got up to 60mph on a duel & as I passed a filter lane the van went into limp mode! 60 to 20mph in a matter of minutes. I smacked those hazard lights & shit myself. Looked at the phone wondering if there was anywhere I could pull in, when a fifty foot length of pavement appeared next to the filter lane, I bounced up those kerbs & parallel jumped the caravan up. The hedgerows had even been cut back. No bus stop, no houses for miles, I couldn't believe my luck. Looked up the warning in the handbook lol "Stop immediately consult a Peugeot dealer"
Kin hell! My recovery company found someone who could take a long wheel base van & a 10ft pop up caravan all the way back to Eastbourne on a Friday night & eventually my journey home began. Got back well after midnight in the biggest lightning storm you could imagine, we got soaked. I decided I would try & hire a van in the morning. Up at 7 & a quick shower I started phoning round as each van hire opened. At 10 Avis got back to me they had a van that needed to be back by 9am on Monday. Fantastic! Miss'es dropped me off, paperwork complete ready to pay & my credit card pin got locked! Managed to get away with a telephone sale & drove home to start loading. Loaded up for a night in the van & eventually got away at 2pm, arrived at the circuit at 7.30 & started unloading as I was sleeping in the van. Had a few ciders & a later night than intended, after midnight. Sunday morning I was up earlier than intended as my mate Lee who had come to help found sleeping in a tent was not to his liking lol. Saw the wonderful Sophie & got sighed in, got scrutineered & was pleased with the praise the bike got. Set up in the exit area for the sound check & the bike started on 2 cylinders, a quick push on the wires & leads & off she went! Ran her up & took her to 5,000 for the noise test, when clatter, clatter pop the engine went bad. I pulled the plug, Ouch, it was not a good noise. Parked the bike & dragged out the North. Scrutineered, sound checked, renumbered & signed on again & I was out. I enjoyed my 2 races but I cant get comfortable on the North as it's too small & I get stuck with a locked shoulders & neck & just cant throw it about anymore. Getting old & not doing anything with my mobility, flexibility. Ohh shit exercises incoming.
Lovely run home got in after midnight, got up early to unload & get the van washed & cleaned & back to Avis. Achieved ? Not sure but I dont like to give up. This was my birthday present to myself & I wanted it. Cost wow open! Not sure about taking the engine out as I have other fish to fry for Donington Park in August. After much reading up & buying a code reader, I traced the area I needed to look at with the van. After watching 6 videos on you tube. I found a fuse box (by removing the headlight) that contained a maxi fuse for the radiator fan, yes all that grief for £5s worth of fuse. Put in a place your cant get to, with a warning to check the engine & consult Peugeot! How much better to say your fan fuse has blown. Take the stress right out of the situation. Put out the code & been on a couple of good runs & it's all good. Saying that I've not run the cabin fan as that's the side(it has 2 fans) that usually packs up.
Tune in next week for the further adventures of TinTin
Still smiling
