Note to Matt - (CNW) - adding a set of alloy wheels adapted/machined so they'll fit commandos, to your product line might be the next big thing to go along with your excellent electric starter, Cj
 
Agreed, one should be very careful in using period magnesium wheels. Back when I put the EPM mags on my Norton, they weren't "old". If I were to use period magnesium wheels now, I'd have them crack tested first, and maybe x-ray tested. I wouldn't worry much about the cast aluminum wheels that are commonly referred to nowdays as mags. They are considerably stronger than, and not nearly as susceptible to corrosion and stress cracks as magnesium wheels. I'd still inspect them pretty carefully for evidence of curb impacts and such. They are also way more suited to street use than magnesium race wheels.

Yup,
I had a rear Dymag wheel crack between 2 of the spokes while on holiday in Spain. They were second hand and I should have had them x-ray tested.

Magnesium has been colorfully described as "electrified dirt" and mag wheels begin to disintegrate after a certain time. They make nice garage art.
 
Dose any one have a pair of pre 75 commando cast alloy wheels for sale , I think there was a batch made as I’ve seen them on bikes

I searched for cast wheels for a while, and couldn't find the ones that fit a commando. A pair will occasionally pop up for sale but they were a rare find. I eventually adapted yamaha cast aluminum wheels to my commando. They work well. Here's the link if you want to take a look.

Your wheels look excellent, and they will and I’m sure do work , but Norton’s of the 70s has 19 in wheel and the rear dum was always on the left , Lester made some and as you say they pop up now and then ,
 
If my memory is correct (and it sometimes isn't) the original Morris wheels, both magnesium and aluminum versions, were not made specifically for the Norton, but were a basic wheel with adapters available for various bikes, including Norton Commandos and Triumph twins and triples. As I recall, they had the bearing carriers drilled in a 5-bolt pattern so that the Norton and Triumph disks would bolt on. I don't recall ever seeing one for a Norton drum rear brake. The ones I've seen required converting the rear to a disk brake. They were originally available in both 18" and 19" sizes.

This is a picture of a set of Morris cast wheels that I bought from one of the members here, that he had fitted to a pre-75 Commando using a disk conversion for the rear wheel. The wheels are 18" rear and 19" front.

I assume you have no cush drive on the back wheel with this setup?
I used to have a set of CMA s on my commando, the mag wheel was shrunk onto the Norton hub keeping the cush drive

Correct. If you wanted a cush drive you would have to make a cush drive sprocket carrier, something like this

A little more detail on the cush drive. They are pretty simple to make.

What rubbers do you use in those?
The reason I ask is a mate of mine had astralite wheel's (not on a Norton) and the cush drive rubbers were from a TZ and very hard to get hold of at that time

I make them up on the lathe from 1.125" diameter polyurethane rubber bars, 80A durometer, purchased from McMaster-Carr. They machine better if you freeze them first, and even better if you freeze them with dry ice, or even better with liquid nitrogen. I didn't have anything but the shop freezer available, but I was able to drill them out and cut them to length on the lathe, with just a little clean-up on the belt sander.
