Does anyone have leads for putting MAG wheels on a commando?? I know they haven't been made for many years. but surely someone has done this. If anyone has pictures of commandos with MAGs on please send them my way. I'm looking for alternative to spokes.

Thanks

If you mean real mags, i.e. magnesium, not aluminum, this is a set of EPM wheels I fitted to my PR back in the day. If you're talking about cast aluminum wheels, see the recent thread on fitting them.

No pictures, but some of our local members have used Lester alloy wheels on Commandos.

Just found the photo....see the Commando on the far left with Lester wheels.

Pic of what are said to be Peter Williams type mags - currently on a featherbed Commando on UK ebay.

Thanks for replying.

Don't MAGs need to be machined to fit a Commando?? if so Does anyone or a shop still do it??

If you have the machining skills there are a lot of Jap bikes with mag wheels you can adapt to a norton. In fact the whole front end can be swapped out and you could have dual disc. The sky is the limit.........

There was a " Norton 78 " ressurection attempt . Single SU carb , Mags and Italian forks .
The Ducati Bevel type front end. Said to fit , though a series of the Ducati mags cracked.

Finding some old Morris ? Lester Mags might do the trick . They were standard on one of the left foot Bonnevilles .1979 .

I don't really know but isn't it dangerous to use "old" magniesum wheels due to the metal aging and cracking??

Agreed, one should be very careful in using period magnesium wheels. Back when I put the EPM mags on my Norton, they weren't "old". If I were to use period magnesium wheels now, I'd have them crack tested first, and maybe x-ray tested. I wouldn't worry much about the cast aluminum wheels that are commonly referred to nowdays as mags. They are considerably stronger than, and not nearly as susceptible to corrosion and stress cracks as magnesium wheels. I'd still inspect them pretty carefully for evidence of curb impacts and such. They are also way more suited to street use than magnesium race wheels.

i fitted similar forks /wheels as the 76 'works' bike , came off a parrallel twin Duke but modified a bit
if intressed pm me
ps i do go over to GB often , where are you?

Small world. Not a Commando, but I fitted Yamaha SRX6 wheels to my wideline with Commando engine for Bonneville

I fit them so I could run higher speed Z rated radial tires. I later converted the bike back to it's original AHRMA vintage race configuration with wire wheels.

Look like early CMA wheels. I have a set of 5 spoke CMA wheels off a 750 commando. Had them made in the very late 70s. Front is machined for twin commando disc's and rear has commando hub pressed in to fit standard drum/sprocket assembly.

Agree they look like the CMA's I had on my Commando in the early 80's. Spoked wheels only for me now, but with period correct flanged ally rims -yum!
Cheers, Martin
