I have a 1974 850 commando which has been running horrible when it does start but refuses to start most of the time. Ive just rebuilt the engine fitting a new connecting rod and oversize pistons. I had to pull start it just to get it running and then I set the ignition timming with a stroboscope and then the stroboscope itself stopped flashing and the bike started to misfire right after I set the timming in both cylinders perfect. The bike tries but will not start by kick starting and it has a weak blue spark on both sides even after I replaced both points and both condensers. I cant think of anything else that is wrong so if someone could help out that would be fantastic, thanks.

Ugh. If it won't run right when "running," starting is going to be even more of a bitch than usual.

Suggest a very methodical approach. Nakes sure you've got a right battery and no voltage drop to coils/points (being an EI man, I don't know the connections). Points timing/dwell, valve clearances, throttle sync, idle passages unclogged, FRESH GAS (including in the float bowls - dump the old shite), maybe a bit of SeaFoam in the tank, etc. A bunch of kicks to clear the sump, somewhat. A few more kicks with clutch in to free the plates. Fuel tap(s) on, tickle if Amals, get the kicker just to the I'm on compression but not locked bit, and kick for all you're worth. Watch for kickback.

Repeat as necessary.

Let us know how you get on, please!

Best of luck.
