CNW E-Start Reviews

Haven't there been previous threads about lithium batteries, pro and con. Wouldn't that be the place to have this
oil type thread? The question from the OP is:
"Could we hear from some folks that have had a CNW for a while and any comments that they have on the system? TIA"
And then he helps derail his own thread.
Matt sells the Shorai battery as an accessory item within his parts inventory and not solely for the electric start kit though
he recommends it. A glass mat battery will spin that starter just as easily. :)
The pros and cons of the cNw kit were well covered. In post #3 I mentioned the battery - an important part of the upgrade in my estimation. I also made a comment that triggered someone which started more deviation. I've already apologized for that. Then along the way people started reading the latest posts instead of all and started more tangents and misunderstandings.

In other words humans having a conversation.

Now we have a two or three new tangents - yours, depending on who you triggered - maybe it's off my back now. :)

Ummmm... Sorry??

How many minutes work does a starter system do in one year.
10 starts a week @ 3 seconds duration is 26 minutes work per annum, I think the battery and starter will cope.

Well, my cNw estart was installed my Matt - I can't fault it.
Only had it for 15 months (4600 miles) and it's always perfect.
I do mostly kick start but use it occasionally - it never fails to start the bike immediately. (I got it for when I'm too old and decrepit to kick!)
I suppose one of the best testimonies to it is that, after sitting in a crate being shipped from US (5 months!!) the combo of the Shorai battery and the cNw estart started the bike, first press, without need for charge.
Cheers
I was wondering about this.. so the cNw estart doesn't render the kickstart unusable? I'd like to kick it most times, but perhaps if it stalls in a busy intersection that estart would be handy.

I have stock Lucas controls. I don't have any turn signals attached so basically I just use the horn and the kill switch. Can I use these controls to trigger the cNw estart? Thanks!

I'm emailing Matt at cNw now to put together a plan. The two big upgrades I want are the e-start and Brembo brakes. These both involve my Lucas switch gear so I'll probably do them together. I've been tempted to switch to the Japanese controls but I like the original look.

Yes and no.
The Shorai battery is definitely part of the e-start system for most? The posted official info that " LiFePo4 batteries cannot overheat" did beg correction.
Someone asked how old the melted batteries are-

The photos are from 2011 to 2017.
This video is from April 2020, 3 year old Shorai battery found smoking in the trunk of 2011 Lotus. Not sure what a modern Lotus has for charging. It's a standard Toyota auto engine.

I try to tell you a old weak YTX 14 spins my CNW up, If I had a fresh YB9B, I'm pretty sure It would work and as for Lithiums, Just what I need to burn my bike and shop to the ground, But as least I would have to worry about kick starting bikes any more they would be all up in smoke, IF you want to run lithium,, NO problem , I'd up my home owner's insurance. and insure my bikes for full coverage. Funny at the race tracks , I go to even the best racers and tuners listen to my thoughts and are interested in what I do, as simple as they are. As one tuner/ builder told me today," I /we build "Universal bikes" race bikes that any one can ride." and that one hit the nail on the head, Simple well build bikes that any racer can race, no adjustments needed. They work, period. Simple, No problems and get my riders into Victory Circle. Where they belong.

I don't think any estart should stop you using the kicker - but I thoroughly recommend Matt's unit!
I mainly use the estart when I am having a short (read slack) trip, wearing shoes that wouldn't fare well kick-starting.
I've never had a stall - but I suppose it would work very well in that case.

Yeah, I've never ever stalled either. Was just using my imagination that it could be handy.

Something I've started doing on all my builds is the 520 chain medication. You'll have the bike far enough apart installing electric start that it will add less than an hour to complete that modification.

Hmm. Is the move here to shed weight and gain HP?

Is there a thread that comes to mind where this is explained and debated? A quick search showed scattered results. I'm curious if anything else needs to be adjusted with it.

And of course, I just got my primary and regular chain tension dialed in this weekend..

Chains have been discussed a lot. I've caused enough tangents on this thread. See this link: https://www.gregmarsh.com/MC/Chains.aspx .

If you want to know why I have started using modern chains, PM or call me.

You won't have a primary chain if you upgrade to the cNw electric start and you'll have to readjusted your drive chain anyway.

Fascinating. Looks like I'll be busy for years to come.. there's always something to add or adjust, huh?

I pity anybody looking for a review of the CNW starter here.
French engineering or Swedish American engineering?

A Shelby-Volvo or a Peugeot?

And I say this having been to school in France...Viva la France!

Make sure your switch gear is in good shape. I believe Matt includes a new starter button because the old switchgear is, well, old. Will it work, maybe. But at the very least I’d take it apart and look at it.
