Amal Premiers

FWIW, you may find that one carb will "tickle" well and the other will not. As noted, if that's the case, some tickler adjustment may be needed or float level in the poor tickler might be too low.

I had that on my original set of Amal's - right carb would tickle/drip very quickly while the left took 10-15 seconds to do the same thing. On my new set of Amal premiers it was the opposite - left tickled immediately, right took around 10-15 seconds with float levels identical. ;)

I checked the float heights before I fitted them and the were both 40 thou below the top the float bowl. Mine tickles quickly on both sides now, it was just the initial tickle that was slow. I turn both fuel taps on pre tickle then once flooded turn reserve off, seems to help but it may well be physiological...

I agree that the fuel tap has an influence.

A practical periodic maintenance check would be to remove the hose from a petcock, turn on, and measure/observe the fuel flow rate into a jar.
Partially rust/debris plugged petcock strainer screens inside the fuel tank can reduce the flow and effect higher speed running.
Easy to make this check.

Ok, the standard AMAL 932 pair is about 100 bucks less than the "premier". The premier differences are "precision engineered idle circuit", "ethonol resistent stay-up float" and "forged alloy anodized slide". Are they worth the extra 100 bucks?

Yes.

Wassell Evolution have the same spec as Premiers, share interchangeable parts and are $50-80 less per pair I believe.

If you are older you have even less time remaining to play around.
Why? Say the buyer is in his mid to late 60s.

Even less time left to faff around with carbs that don't quite work...
you need the Premieres.
When my dad reached about 70 he took his $700 four year old malfperforming gas weed Wacker in to the dealership and traded for a new one. I think they gave him $200 for the old one.
" It worked great for four years and then got hard to start. Tried a new plug etc, didn't help. I don't want to piss around with it, when I feel good enough to do the work I want the damn thing to start"
He did the same with a riding lawnmower, although I think he upgraded that one.

I thought he was a bit crazy at the time but now at 64, I get it.
Which is better, money in an account that you will never use or carbs ( or a weedwacker) that work as intended and don't waste your time on earth.

It's different if you truly enjoy faffing around with stuff that almost works.

Glen

Mine are also slow to tickle so I open both petcocks when cold. So far no fiddling after set up... first kick starts. No regrets.

Thanks, they are over 125 USD less than the Amal premier equivalent for a pair. I just ordered a pair. Read the reviews and they all agree that the Wassells have all the improvements/features of the Amal premiers.

Let us hear how they go for you. I think Madass has used them (from some old obscure post I recall reading).
At $125 usd less...some good gas money right there!

It seems that these are now widely in use - is there any feedback on these? by lack of posts since April I assume that they are working perfectly.

Trying to gather all the Amal Premier specs to enable ordering new Amal for a Mk3 Interstate.

The numbers on the Mk3 original Amal carbs are 932 L34 and 932 R33.
Mk3 Commando Amal Premiers should now come fitted with '19' pilot jets.
The standard specification would include 928/107 stepped spray tubes and 928/104 needles.
Main jets would be 260.
Slides would be 928/3½.
Float setting to be .060" below float bowl gasket surface.

Anything not correct or left out?
needle jet? 622/122/106 ?
622/074 spray tube?
622/060/35 slide? hard anodized number?

I believe the Amals specd for the 850 engine have the inboard carb to manifold mounting flange ears trimmed a bit to allow enough clearance. Be sure your supplier has these or you can file them down yourself.

Original 932/33 and /34 would've had '220' main jets for black cap/bean can silencers.

However, Amal (Burlen) are under the impression the 850 Mk3 had 932/42 and /43 carbs with '200' main jets!

Edit: According to the 850 Mk3 parts book the float bowls were 622/056 with 0.125" float needle seats.

Float setting to be .060" below float bowl gasket surface.

Amal now recommend setting by fuel level, not float height and to use the latest aluminium float needles in preference to brass:.

Is a 260 main jet correct?

Seems rather large to one more used to Trumpet twins...
