Amal Premiers

Commando Premiers should now come fitted with '19' pilot jets instead of the standard '17'.
The standard specification would also include 928/107 stepped spray tubes and 928/104 needles.

His discovery was that you fall off before anything grounds!

One hot summer's day I was on a single track road, no straights just 15 miles of left to right to left and I grounded the pilot footpeg rubbers on a few corners but they did not dig in, no passenger abroad and full preload on the rear suspension.

Amal Premiers
The carbs have landed and all looks well on initial inspection. Not had them apart yet to check for swarf, that’ll be Sunday. An interesting note in the packaging though, I’m referring to the last sentence.

Guess that makes you the Quality-Control officer since nobody at Amal seems to be doing it! ;)

That's pretty bad, really! Sort of saying, "Check to see if we screwed up and if we did, let us know and we'll takes some sort of action to correct it. I'm sure you won't mind waiting!"

At least they're aware of their shortcomings. Might not be on top of things, but definitely climbing the ladder.

If I am shelling out around, up to or over $400.00 for a new set of carbs I am not interested in a company that is "climbing the ladder" in terms of the quality offered.

"Check for swarf and clean as needed???
Please make sure you have matching jets....in a brand new set of carburetors?!"
And...if those are known issues with a new set I begin to wonder what else is not right with them, hidden away, damn near impossible to find.
Gimme' a friggin break.

What Mike said.
If that's the best Burlen FS can do to oversee the quality of what they are selling, well....that is commonly known as pathetic.
I also wonder as to what the process is concerning where the carbs are constructed/built/assembled.
Does it happen in Willshire or is that just a stopover or distribution point.

Anyone here been to their facility?

I am glad I took the time to read through this thread. And also relieved I rebuilt mine rather than buy a new set as some suggested.

Not trying to put a jinx on you Dellis, hope all works out, just sporting my own thoughts here.

So as advised I’ve checked and the pilot jets are both 19, the mains are both 260 and they are free of swarf. As I’ve not had a set of Premiers before it would be useful if when being asked to check the pilot jets there was some indication of the markings, for reference three rings identifies a 19 pilot jet.

All good so far.

That was my point, seems a strange way of doing things to me.

Maybe to cover dealer mixed stocks and buyers who replace one of a pair at a time.

I know. I tend to fret over all new production....There just appears to be a lack of pride in work done these past years. The 'it's good enough attitude' prevails.

I bought two sets of Premiers (30mm/32mm) and also a new Amal for my pre unit TR6.

You must pull them down fully and check everything but its not like you wouldn't do that anyway for peace of mind.
Even the last set of FCR's was no different.... Trust nothing until you know its good, I am doing assembly yesterday, take a new clutch drive hub out of the bag only to find a crack in the oil seal band.
Welcome to the modern CNC world, cheap steel, poor quality and most likely a person with a 'its just a job mentality, excuse me, FaceBook notification, a mate has posted a picture of his breakfast. :D

Most of the important inventions we take for granted today, ie computers, telephone, electric light and so on, came from brilliant UK minds.
I'll put up with a bit of potential swarf.

Buy to your price point. Don't like new Amals at their price/quality? Then pay more for something else.
There are millions of old Amals out there begging to be sleeved and have new bits installed.
Oooooh! Fuel injection!!

I wish, there is a guy on UK.eBay that sells used but 'loved tools of all manner, guess where all my 0.0001" division dial gauge and indicators come from not to mention all the various tools stamped 'Made in Sheffield .... I am a regular customer.... It is hard to buy good tooling even if you want to pay the price, even Mitutoyo (Japan) are made in China.

A month back (probably more) I drive down to the 'big smoke to a large bearing store to get Norton wheel bearings.
Price was not a consideration, I want the best available, fit and forget until I am 70.
The choice was dismal even if you were prepared to pay for top shelf parts. ?

Amal Premiers are fine, you just check them before fitment, not hard because the next best thing is ? not an Amal.
Yes I could have machined my old Carburetors to as new, why bother when there is New.
How is the AN ham can mesh still in the sealed (British air) bag that has rust spots. :D

You could devote a whole thread to the perils of modern manufacture but that would be off topic.

Properly performing fuel injection beats carbs in every way. Unfortunately it's quite a big undertaking to convert our Norton's to i bikes, from what I've read of Jim Comstock's setup.

I still believe in the KISS principal.
For a 50 year old bike design the Amals worked if they were not worn out. The Premiers corrected all that.
Cheers,

I have but one question....I like my Amals & everything they do for & on my 850, also how they look & perform, require tickling, & the quick little sputter as I roll them on quickly. Does this make me ill or deficient in some way?
