72 Combat Proddy Build

Re: 72 Combat Proddy Build- It begins...

Gday Swoosh, Ludwig has suggested not to use a spring washer on the trans top adjuster bolt and also a link showing the demo of what vibrations can do in loosening nuts. You said "yeah only temporary", I would like to know if this is a common problem with Commando,s in this area and what is the best fix. If your using a belt drive, some say set and forget, so use Locktite? :?:

What I meant by "temporary" is just to hold it in place until I could reach for a Nyloc.

A wise man once said that these are British bikes. They vibrate and rattle. It's smart to check all the fixins' often.

Air Cleaner (back). Top bracket not fit. Needs an "attitude adjustment". Proper bolts coming tomorrow.

Medium Hole to the left is oil tank. Big Hole in the center is Wiring Harness. Small hole is fender bracket. How'd I do?

Don't forget spacer 062170.
Nylocks aren't very good at keeping things tight, just keeping things from falling off.

Why are there so many damn spacers on this bike?

Re: 72 Combat Proddy Build- It begins...

are you going to use std carbs and air filter :?: , if not I'd toss the backing plate now, it becomes a pain later on, it restricts your filter use.

Heck yeah, I love Amals. So simple even a dummy like me can figure them out. Toss the backing plate? Hrrmph.

Re: 72 Combat Proddy Build- It begins...

yeah, ditch the backing plate and use a clamp-on K&N. Don't buy the knockoff, it doesn't fit.

Or use foam pods, they filter fine dirt better...

my $0.02 USD :)

Hi Dave,

Will need to look at mine again, but am remembering that top mounting tab for the air cleaner back plate is supposed to be in front of the frame gusset. In your photos is behind the gusset. The spacer goes between the gusset and the mounting tab on the front side. The nice thing about the orginal part is it has an ignition switch bracket.

My ignition switch bracket was cut off (I still have it). I'll mount the ignition switch elsewhere. Thanks for the hint on the top bracket. I'll try that.

For all you Amal haters. It looks too pretty to throw away. I'll make it work, I tell you, I'll make it work!

5/16 brass nut acting as a spacer. $10 says it says there.

Looking good. You ought to have it running a month from now, eh?

Aside from missing a few hundred thousand dollars worth of parts... sure.

72 Combat Proddy Build

Speaking of which, why is this $75? Three banjos and some plastic tubing...

Re: 72 Combat Proddy Build- It begins...

Spend $50 more and get braided stainless steel with chrome banjos & button head banjo bolts.

So it's $75 so you won't feel bad about spending more for the stainless braided one?

The plastic original type do have some advantages. The braided stainless act like a hacksaw on anything it touches from the vibes. Also never had a plastic oil line leak, but my stainless a while back leaked from the banjo connections..got it stopped.

Dave,

I've always been a proponent of twin 32mm Amals on my combat. This week took delivery of a used 34mm Mikuni setup.
W will give it a try. Already fitted it up and the air filter delivered doesn't clear the original cleaner backing plate. May need to find a shorter K&N.

The kit from Old Britts has a clear cover to prevent the marring.

Re: 72 Combat Proddy Build- It begins...

Old Britts stainless rocker feed lines have a heavy clear plastic coating.

 Ouch!

http://www.rgmmotors.co.uk/

065561 ROCKER OIL FEED PIPE £ 22.48

With VAT, shipping etc it may get to $50? I chose to stay 'original' here as the braided hose with stacked banjos looks less pleasing to my eye, at least.

Just my ha'pennyworth (VAT & decimalisation not included)
