Any idea what this part is?

You didn't give any dimensions, and there are no clues in the photo to give an idea of its size , but it looks similar to the MkIII electric starter gear needle roller bearing inner race?
If that is in fact what it is, and I'm not sure about it, then I've no idea why the item would be found amongst a load of Combat parts, but perhaps you might?:

Re: 72 Combat Proddy Build- It begins...

We have a MkIII parts bike so a mix of MkIII is entirely possible. Thanks.

Looks great!

"As they say the Commando is built around the battery tray"

That's probably true but based on some recent work I did, I would have said a Commando was built around the horn! :)

Doesn't the horn hang from the battery tray?

Does this part stick that far inside? Is there something else that bolts to this?

So, I found all the stainless bolts to mount the engine. My brother warned me to make sure the gearbox is in first. Even though it's not finished I stuck it in. My cousin is coming over this afternoon so I'll have some extra hands. Just pop it in, right? The rear iso bolt isn't right but it's a good placeholder. The lower gearbox bolt isn't right either, but that too can be replaces easily (I hope).

Gearbox spacer on the drive side, right?

And because I was bored and couldn't do anything else I popped the rearsets on just to take a look. If that's not motivation to keep going I don't know what is.
Brand new 18 tooth sprocket. Think the Combat will like that?

Next picture will be with the engine in, if everything goes ok.

Re: 72 Combat Proddy Build- It begins...

swoosh.combat might love the 18 tooth gearbox sprocket, not sure about the rear chain and tyer,

I recounted and it's 19, maybe that's better...

Re: 72 Combat Proddy Build- It begins...

Yes, it is the MkIII starter gear inner race.

Right.

Re: 72 Combat Proddy Build- It begins...

Dave, how are you going to get at your nice shiny new primary adjuster when you fit the inner prmary :?:

Gday Swoosh, its starting to look good and motivating me. Is it still cold over there or youre that clinical gloves must be worn, nice shine too by the way!

If I use a belt drive I'm told that I will not need to adjust it. For example Ludwig mounted his without any adjuster.

When I was younger I mocked the guys who wore gloves working on bikes. Now I prefer to clean my hands by just talking the gloves off.

It was nice yesterday, 50F. Last nite it got down below freezing.

Re: 72 Combat Proddy Build- It begins...

My cousin came over. It took a bit of wrestling to get the engine in. It would have been easier if the frame had been more secure. But she went in.

And in! The first attempt failed as I had a stick under the cradle which lifted it too high. Repositioning the cradle worked. As did the extra hands.

Just a few parts missing... I took this picture so the wife would start to understand the obsession. :D

Spindle and swingarm are coming up. I asked my brother where the swingarm bushings were, if he had remembered to pack those. He goes, "I think so, wait are they part number XX-XXXX? I'm looking at them."

I think the plan for the front end is to build them up using used parts. Then when I get tired of the stock parts switch them out... someday. Need the front end to keep going. Once she's on wheels it'll be easier to handle. Right now she's strapped to the ceiling just so she doesn't go anywhere.

Re: 72 Combat Proddy Build- It begins...

I hope you installed the 1/4" bottom engine case bolt, otherwise you'll have to pull the front iso mount bolt, lift the engine, install the bottom engine bolt, then reinstall the front iso mount bolt.

You can see it in a couple of the pictures. All 5 bolts are in. And yes, the lower went in last and yes, we did have to pull the front bolt to do it...

I'm going to have to pull the iso out at some point to put the gaiters on. I consider this kind of a pre-final build. I hope I don't need to yank the engine for anything so we'll see.

But if you are using the Production Racer seat you want to use a plain or stainless bolt on the top shock mount!
You will need to make fender braces to go from this top shock bolt to the fender if you are using a genuine PR rear fender.

I'll be building the bike up initially as a Roadster. With the modified oil tank to clear the PR seat. And using a stock rear fender.
