I've checked posts on where to mount the horn but couldn't find anything that looks similar to what I have. The horn was not on the bike when I disassembled it so I have no picture of where it went. I did have a picture of the triangular mounting bracket. I've tried fitting the horn in all the orientations shown but none fit in the frame. What have I got wrong please.

IIRC, that triangular bracket mounts to the rear fender mounting point, where you have it... around which the bike is built.

Love the comment about the bike being built around the horn. I still take great pleasure in removing the existing horn on every project bike. The lower triple tree is a good place to mount a better horn.

Bentrod if you are going for a concours restoration then go ahead and awkwardly swear at this effort of meep - horn that no one can much see or hear. Most cars nowadays shield out meeps very well. Otherwise like-say you would want to drive the thing ,there are so many safer options out there on other threads to search. In my book a horn should be front and central and modern and LOUD and the pushbutton large and easily hit. A relay helps boost power to it. Peter.

Actually I do have a Stebel air horn. I had it on my R90s and have since removed it to restore the BMW to original condition. I agree with you, I think I'm going to figure a way to use the Stebel.

Stebel good. Just checking your motivations here and glad to HEAR you will be driving. The horn on my R1100 RT is so loud I have to take a breath in and hold it so as not to shock my heart. But my god do the cars move back to where they came from.

The Lucas 9H on my Combat is in the stock location and loud as hell.
Mine is wired thru a relay.
It does help to take a little time and fiddle with the adjustment screw for maximum loudness.
At first it was very useless, but now is startling.

The manual says it goes out of adjustment noting tiny cross headed adjuster screw needs to be backed off until the ammeter indicates correct range 11-12-15 volts. I'd consider a relay essential, but glad to HEAR you got it startling goodly. There is a dual alternating setup with a transistorized vibrator that I've never HEARD in action . Police stuff ?
