You really know how to hurt a guy. Mostly the machining.

Fine looking bike you have going.

Have you run it at all with your two breather system? The reason I ask is that I have a '71 with only the left hand side camshaft breather and it really help evacuate the sump after it sits for a while. But even during normal operation once the sump has cleared it still moves some oil.

I am merely curious and am trying to get a better handle on the breathing of a '71. I have gotten down the theory of creating a vacuum in the crankcase, but there seems to be much less info on modifications to the '71.

best of luck with the rest of the build, I wish I could be doing the same right now.

cheers
john

John,

No I have not run the bike like this. I bought the old girl as a non-running builder. Had been sitting since 1979.
I have the left vent and the right vent. There are holes in the side of the crankcase under the timing chain cover.
I do not know how it will work but the general concensus is that it will be fine.
We will find out soon enough as I plan on kicking her over for the first time in the next few weeks.

Well.. Im off on a 1600 mile rip on the YZF1000 this weekend (SFO-SEA-SFO). I am going to stop in portland to see if anybody is at the motoczysz factory. Gota feeling there gone because its a GP weekend here in San FRan.

Dave, how far are you from I-5. Ill probably be passing Portland tomorrow around 2ish. Just a thought. maybe on the way back.?

I should be home by then. I'm in NE Portland, basically between I-5 and I-205 just a couple miles off your path. Stay off I-205, there's construction on the bridge. Traffic will be bad enough.

I'll PM my cell.

Nice bike, but about that dog! Looks like a Bouvier Bernoise (Bernese Mountain Dog in American-speak). I had one in France a few years ago, the sweetest dog ever. Not a mean bone in her body. My daughters were quite young at the time, and she was patient, tolerant, and loving, in spite of their enthusiastic romping. I'm sure your experience is as positive as mine was.

Hello all,
I am so close to firing up the Norton, probaby this weekend. (will be 4 years to the day if I start it this weekend since the project began)

regarding the warning light assimilator (the round thing on the spiral spring between the coils). I have the three wires that go to the unit (one of which is the red ground) bu tthe wiring diagram does really give details as to which wire color goes where on the assimilator---or does it even matter, which im sure it does. The connections are labeled, just need to know which color wire goes to what terminal tab. :)

If anyone has a moment , could you peek at down by the coils at the assimilator and check? My Norton is a 71 750....Thanks

Tyler

You don't need to post the whole link of the embed code. Just copy the URL from your address bar. The video tags for the forum do the rest.

Can't wait for the sounds of the bike! I'm getting dangerously close too. I might be up that late tonite. I had a trials yesterday that kicked my ass or else I would have worked on it last nite.

I am sure you all understand How I feel today...I have restored many bikes over the years, but this is my first Norton,
It was the first time I rode a norton also. I am stoked. There are a few things (leaks) that I need to address, and the carbs need some fettling. The kick start is a bit tight so ill have to take the outer trannycover off.

But other than that, its great.

Thanks for your input, Tyler

Congrats!

Well done.

Where's the seat?

Still being covered...the guy works out of his garage and has a day job...So he really only does seat coverings on the weekends and evenings.

Hope to squeeze a visit to the DMV this week to get the registration sorted.

Thanks, Tyler

Here is a short video showing these really neat LEDs Im going to use in place of side reflectores that go on the side of the fastback cowl.

Are those going to be running lights or turn signals?

Im going to use them a running lights. I ride at night everyday coming home from work. So I wanted some illumination on the sides of the bike.

Hello,

The Norton is registered (yay, only 2 hours at DMV). So today I took the bike out for a 20 mile easy break-in ride. I got up to 50mph and did alot of acceleration and decellerations. Drove through town and such and for the most part shes running great.
Although---there is one issue I am having with shifting, I have been told that these trannys are some of the smoothest shifting out there, But mine seems...well for the lack of a better word "crunchy". It shifts into gears up and down, but the effort seems a little more than neccessary, and its is difficult to get it to notch completly into gear--- sometimes it downshifts very nicely with a little blip of throttle. I followed the manual precisly for adjusting clutch. The cable and adjusting screw are brand new. The friction plates are the originals and were measured at the time of assembly ( 3 years ago) for serviceability. When the engine is off and I run through the gears while spinning the wheel by hand, it shifts perfectly, so It must mean the tranny itself is fine. Do I have some sort of clutch problem? It almost feels like I need more plate separation?? Should I open up the primary and re-soak the plates? Exactly how many friction plates shoud i have in a 1971 750 commando, I know 850s had i extra plate? right?

Wanted to know if this is an obvious problem. Thanks.

Also, my kick start lever wont stay tight on shaft.

Thanks all, Tyler
