Chaps,

Today I fitted the Paul Goff LED headlight bulb along with new shallower lens unit and LED pilot bulb, that I bought a little while back.

There are currently 4 bikes in t’ shed: ‘68 Bonnie, ‘74 Cdo, ‘16 BMW and ‘18 961...

All 4 bikes are parked up pointing at the wall. When I’d done I switched them all on and guess what, the old bikes now have the best headlamps, by a considerebale margin too.

I fitted Goff LED stop and tail bulbs as well, as many have said before, the tail is now as bright as the stop used to be!

Brighter lights with a fraction of the current draw, what’s not to like?!

Chuffed!

I fitted LED's all around my 2013 Bonne the first year I had it (2015). I agree with all you state. What options are there for the Commado stock headlight lens (I've actually got the 5 3/4" HiRider shell on right now...might change it at some point). Can the OEM lamps take an H4 format bulb (which are available readily as LEDs) like my Bonne?

Recently installed a prefocus LED in the OZ Rapide and have used the leftover wattage to run a heated vest in town traffic.
With the 60/55 quartz in there, the vest had to be switched off at speeds below 55 mph, that was the balance speed with both on.
Now it's possible to run the vest and headlight continually , even in stop and go or very slow traffic.

The vest is 35 watts, the new LED draws 10 watts, so even the two together are 15 watts lower draw than the old 60 watt headlight.
I agree, the light is brighter.
This prefocus LED was purchased from the Bonneville Shop.
It looks the same as the Paul Gough item.

You can easily get a standard type bulb replacement in LED for the 961. I fitted one to my T140 and old Commando.

The light they emit is much brighter than the halogen bulb. Although the spread of light is different.

I did NOT fit an LED to the 961 because I have a Shorai battery. Shorai batteries like to ‘warm up’ with a bit of current passing through them, in order for them to perform properly with regards to cranking speed. So fitting an LED would be counter productive in this instance.

Thanks;

Found and ordered these, as you say direct replacements. Did you fit the Shorai for weight reduction racing etc ?

LED Autolamps had a dealer in Melbourne so was cheaper shipping, the headlight comes in a blister pack of 2 so my Ducati Scrambler is going to get a touch of love also and rear brake light.

My Ducati has headlight on all time as I'm sure that's a legal requirement in Aus, the Nort needs turning on so I thought that a 570lm effective side/driving lamp up front would be of great benefit. Break light is also far brighter than the original. I find the OEM indicators on the 961 though are already MASSIVE and bright.

Out of interest which Paul Goff headlight LED bulb did you fit Eddie?
I do a fair bit of riding at night and I find the headlight bulb from Paul Goff underwhelming
That's to say the dip beam is ok but main beam is not
However the tail light from him is very good

I went this route as well wish there was a way to toggle the tail lamp into the stop lamp for daytime driving.
Dont drive at night so the headlamp is just there for safety.

Bluey, yes I fit Shorai batteries due to the huge weight saving. Even more pertinently, on a 961, that battery weight is carried so high. Actually I have Shorai batteries fitted to all of my bikes.

Not sure it makes much real world difference, but I sleep better at night knowing I’m not carrying around a lead weight on my bikes!

So Bluey... you think the stock indicators are massive and bright? Well they’re certainly massive, probably cost 10mph due to aerodynamic loss.

But they’re not so bright. Check out my indicators below (if you can find them) they’re almost invisible when off, but MUCH brighter than stock when on...

goff ships to US takes about a week and a half to get to NC I put one of the BPF LEDs in the shell on my 68 BSA A65 it is so bright it is amazing ...the tiny power draw was a big reason too..now to get them for the 72 T120 and commando

This info pertains to using Li batteries in place of lead acid on vintage non- estart bikes.
Just to clarify, because Shorai has this info somewhat hidden, these batteries actually only contain 1/3 of the AH listed on the label or in the main description.
So an LFX18, which is listed as being "18ah PbEq" only has 6 amphours of storage, and that is only with the correct charging system ( min. 13.1 volts at idle)
The vintage charging systems do not produce this much voltage at idle.
So for weight savings, compare the 18 LFX to a 6 ah gel as you can run the little gel instead. Ive been running a 6 ah on one bike for years, it works fine. About 4 lbs vs
2.3 for the LFX 18
So still a bit of weight is saved, however with the Gel or other lead acid battery you are running a battery mated to the operating voltage of your charging system. The Li battery is not at the correct voltage for your charging system. It might only hold 2ah with your system. Or zero as I ended up with at times in town at night.
So what is the weight savings now?

Some people get around this by doing home charging and then using the bike for short runs only.
This info about actual AH and minimum voltage requirements is on Shorai's site, but it's not front and centre.

Yes Glen, you’ve made your position clear on this a few times!

All I can say is that on my bikes, they’re great!

The 961 is brilliant with it (which was the context of the above discussion).

My T120, T140 and ‘74 Commando all run 12 volt high output Lucas alternators and they all handle them fine too.

On the ‘74 I’ve fitted a Shindengen regulator jobbie, but have generally used podtronic or similar, all have been fine.

I guess things might be different with a converted magdyno etc. Maybe Alton’s aren’t good either? But 12v high output Lucas seems totally compatible in my experience.

Its not really my position Nigel, it's the info on the Shorai site that I like to bring to light.
And sorry about the broken record, my post wasn't aimed at you so much as the uninitiated.
I know you make these batteries work for your situation.
If you hopped on the bike and headed off for 2500 miles of touring, then you might discover there is an issue.
Or perhaps not with the changes you've made.
The main point is that 18 ah pb EQ is only 6 ah storage. This is somewhat misleading labelling / marketing, but highly effective.

Glen

I’ll be testing the Shorai batteries even more soon Glen as I’ll be using one with an electric leg on my incredibly tough to turn over 920 !
