I would like to send a timing cover and pump to them but haven't had a response to email or phone message.
The email was sent a couple of weeks ago, the phone call a few days ago.
Could be on holiday I guess. Has anyone had contact with AMR ( Nortec) recently?

Glen

Subscribing to this thread because I have a 2 covers to send him, but don't want my parts to disappear into an abyss.
Have some concern because he only lists a PO box on his website.
I just did a Google search for Alternative Motorcycle Repair in Sahuarita, AZ 85629, and Google says in red "Permanently Closed".
Unsure if that is related to that location only, or if he is no longer doing business.

I heard they were closed. Maybe local work only? My brother had the AMR fix done to one of his bikes, it still wetsumped...

I guess I'll use my unmentionable fix then.
Oh well, I know that works 100% .

Did he have AMR's $20 pressure relief valve mod done as well? Both mods need to be done together to increase the chances of success.

Nortec Pressure Relief Valve Modification
This modification applies to the Norton Commando models through 1974 that from the factory, had the discharge point of the pressure relief valve relocated from directly into the sump, as was the case with the previous Atlas and Dominator models and the later MK3’s, to the feed line from the oil tank. This allowed in many cases, oil to pass through the pressure relief valve in the timing cover, into the sump when the engine was not running, thereby adding to the wet-sumping problem. Our modification places the discharge point back to its original point, directly into the sump, and requires that the oilway from the feed line in the engine case be plugged with a set-screw that we can supply. It is recommended that the threads in the case be cleaned with a degreasing agent such as carburetor or brake cleaner, and then a quality thread-locking compound such as “Loctite” be applied to the screw. The screw should be threaded in to below flush with the gasket surface, so as not to interfere with the sealing of the timing cover.

The cost of this service is $20, and can be done at the same time that the Nortec anti-wetsump valve modification is done. As stated above, we will supply the set-screw along with a sketch and instructions for its installation. Please indicate in the note with your timing cover and oil pump shipment whether or not you would like us to perform this additional service.

So it's a new drilling in the cover and then plugging a hole in the crankcase?

The description of the OPRV mod is a little unclear to me. Did some of these bikes dump the ORPV to the sump instead of the feed side of the pump? If oil is leaking past the OPRV valve and it dumps directly to the sump, how does that help solve the wet sumping? Obviously I'm missing something. (Like the ability to understand basic concepts?)

I emailed Mike at AMR on Jan 8 of this year and he responded on Jan 9. He said that AMR was still doing the Nortec mod as well as gearbox and tach lip seals. He said that he does not keep regular hours and that email is the best way to contact him. I contacted him because I saw on the internet that AMR was permanently closed...so it had to be true. Right? That was over a month ago, though.

Why not set up and do you own version of the AMR mod Glen?

I guess because I know that the unmentionable cure works perfectly 100% of the time . I might as well put time and money there, as opposed to heading off into unfamiliar territory.
Matt at CNW reported that the AMR mod worked " some of the time", same as Dave's info as well as others here.
Nonetheless, for $80 I would have given it a go, had AMR responded.
Who knows, maybe the proprietor is off on a winter holiday and will respond yet.

I've got two bikes with the AMR mods. The first, my 72 was a bad wet sumper. Would drain the tank in a few days and every time I rode it I had to drain the sump. I had the ball and spring mod and oil pump mods done to it but not the oprv mod. If you let it sit for a couple of months it may leak down some but always seems to stabilize with about a quarter inch of oil showing on the dip stick. I have no problem with starting the bike this way and it quickly pumps the rest back into the tank. Maybe some people may call this a failure, not me.
The second on my 74 I had done as part of the engine rebuild so I don't have a before case on it. I also had the oprv mod on this one. This one holds its level perfectly. With all due respect to CNW, how large is their sample group. Also, like I said I consider slowing the wet sumping down to where I don't have to drain the sump every time a success. But some might call partial leak down a failure.
I had AMR do the 74 towards the end of last year. They were a little slow getting back to me but turned the work around in acceptable time once I sent the cover to them. Also, I got the same internet post that they were permantly closed at the time but they were definitely doing them. I think that permantly closed may have to due with the fact that they don't have regular store hours.
I've also had the mods done on my 71 I'm currently building.

I believe the issue of the AMR mod working “some of the time” has been asked and answered in good technical detail previously on this forum. In the 1st link below look for PeterJoe comments followed by Comnoz. In the 2nd link PeterJoe provides a useful wet sump trouble shooting guide.

AMR is fine...I just got back two timing covers from Mike. Email is really the best way to communicate with AMR. The mods work well to stop the wet sumping issue with Nortons.
