My speedo needle fell off. Anyone know how to get the bezel cover off? The part number doesnt exist in the vdo website. It looks snapped in but cannot confirm. The bezel is cheap plastic so using a screw driver to pry only damages. If I can get it off I will look into making nice bezels from stainless.

There are specialists who work on the old commando units. Perhaps they could give some advice. I wonder what a new VDO unit would cost ? Do you think about $300 USD ? Am I low or high ?

Its probably snapped in but have you tried twisting in case it has a thread? Needle falling off kind of sucks. Snapping the bezel will suck even more.

I have my dads red bike spare but the mileage is stored in the cluster so I don't want to do that.

Can you contact VDO either by phone or email . They may be willing to fix it for you for free ??? Because VDO is a quality brand this may be a solution. If the units are throw away then make them admit to that as well . Just my view of this. If VDO is quality they will want to take care of this. It may be worth a phone call to VDO USA ?

Lets ask Kevin French how about that : His phone # 011 + 44 1332 811988

Thanks guys. You would think the factory would have an answer and post something. Anyhow, once I figured it out I'll share.

Thanks Tony.

Speedo stopped working on my 961 sport with only 1783 miles. Got new sensor and Norton sent me a clock to test on my bike but still not working. Checked everything. Anyone have this problem?

Hey Richard
Did you ever tell us how you got the bezel off and the needle on? How you reinstalled the bezel??

Hello , So are you saying that you replaced the speedo and speedo sensor and still not working ? Broken wire , Can ohm it through with a meter.

Hello Barney , Could you give us more details about your speedo problem ? For example when you say not working , does that mean nothing works ? No needle movement , no odometer , no lights , no lcd readout ? Like power is lost ?

Hi Tony, when the key is turned on the needle flickers. Lights and readout ok, odometer shows but doesn't click up the miles. Checked the wiring loom today with a Fluke multimeter and all seems to be ok. The test speedo that Norton sent me flickered too when key was turned on.

Hello Barney , What year is your bike ? I want to follow the correct wiring diagram .Euro 4, Euro 3 ..

So my bike a 2014 shows a screened cable but the later bike do not. Pin 3 of the speed sensor should get 12v , Pin 2 of sensor goes directly to pin 5 of the speedo plug , and pin 1 is tied to ground. Did you check the 1k resistor between pin 4 and 5 of the speedo connector ? You can swap the speedo senor into the cam sensor position and if the bike starts and run the sensor is good. The cam and speedo sensors are the same.

All wiring is checked, did swap the cam sensor and bike started .

Tony, do you know what is the purpose of this resistor?
The resistor is needed for signal development . Some would call it a pull up resistor . There should be 12 V on the speedo pin 4 as well. Without the resistor the pulses waveform would not appear .
