Right now, there are 50 members and 528 guests here. Of those 50 members I'm guessing about 30 are VIP members. Many of the members who are not VIP members post a lot. I'm wondering why anyone who has been a member for a while is not a VIP member.

If a VIP member, please don't vote!

looks like vip goes back to 2012

Ya, talked about a good bit but few have ever said why. I'll be shocked if many vote but I thought it worth a try to figure it out. There are several members with way more posts than me who are putting up with ads - surprising to me.

Search vip goes back to 2012, no idea how it played out then, other than folks not wanting ads & how to go about vip options

I sign up 2014 to find i have to pay to post easy pix, or the way most are familiar with?? Good luck with that alone, as an incentive or reason to go vip.

I'd call that highly problematic for (not even just ) new folks, from the get go & has played out since; including rich, past history/threads & efforts thru pix, now gone, for 1 reason or another.

So decisions were made here (members thru discussion), that i had no part of, that i also don't agree with or even fundamentally support.

I'm not affected by ads or even notice. No one makes me look at anything im not interested in.

It's not about making things easier or to load pics or ads, being a VIP member helps support Jerry in setting up and running this great site without that support what would happen and with the help from Les who seems to have all the info we need to keep our old bikes going, it cost money to upgrade servers as well time so really paying a small fee to help with these cost is a no brainer for me to help out, maybe cut back on a few Larta's/coffees that most spend money on these days, I am retired and live on a tight budget each week, but I manage to thrown in a little each year to support a great site, where would we be without it.

I have no clue about 2012. Since I've been a member there is no charge for anything other than the $39/year for VIP membership.

My Commando has been mostly perfect over the last 4 or 5 years since I transitioned it to an interstate model for the extra fuel volume. (non-eth) I had previously adapted cast wheels, mounted a fairing, modified Givi hard bag frames to fit it, and bought my custom seat. I sought advice and comments during that period and was a VIP member for almost all of that time.

After I made those changes, I felt like I was done with my bike so I came here less often since it ran really well and kept running well year after year. I also thought my contribution to the knowledge base here was (is) redundant, so comments that I could make to help someone else, would be made by other members anyway. The things that I could uniquely comment about on here were only the odd non-stock elements of my commando which very few people were interested in. Mostly, over the time since my VIP membership ended, I've gotten just a few private messages regarding my commando's oddball features, about which I still get email notifications. I have always returned here to answer each message and be of help to others if I can, but with the exception of my latest project that Ken helped me with, I'm not much of a participant so I let my VIP expire.

I admit also that when I decided to stop participating, the same couple of members were spouting off their political hate speech on a daily basis which seemed to have no consequences. They did not make rational arguments about ideas and policies. They just made accusations and spoke hyperbolically of anyone who didn't agree with their ideological identity. I got tired of reading their persistent comments, so coming here to read their annoying crap lessened my appreciation of the site.

It seems that the biggest offenders are gone now, so I assume that some of them were shown the door. Kudos to the staff here if that's true. We all have our opinions and right to our beliefs, but personally, I don't want to hear about anyone's "Hate". I tend to stop visiting sites where "who I hate" is a popular topic, no matter who it's referring to.

I've owned my commando for almost 50 years now, and I just finally met and joined my local NOC last year. I'm just not much of a "group joiner". I'm an owner/operator who's worked solo or with 1 other solo owner/op most of my life. I'm more task oriented than a socializer. I'm more comfortable doing a project with a friend than sitting around shooting the bull.

Forums are generally 2 things.

1) They are entertainment for some people, where they are just having fun saying shit......

2) they are also about good technical information where a person has an issue and forum members have the right answers to those issues, which saves the person time and money by learning without having to F*ck stuff up to learn things the hard way. I consider this the most important part of this kind of forum. (my opinion)

This is why the most prolific poster can't be a clown, talking out his ass on threads when people are asking for technical help. The 2 purposes can mix a bit, and people can have a laugh and help each other with technical stuff, but one can't diminish the effectiveness of the other...

You wanted opinion,... you got it. I think most of you are awesome, helpful, and well balanced in your membership. Perhaps I should pony up again, seeing as I have so much respect for many of you...

I bought into VIP from the day I registered...AN is a valuable resource and well worth supporting.

As noted there are a lot posters on this forum that have been using AN for years with 1000 posts or more and have never laid out a dime of support....to me that says a lot about that particular user.

you mean like tightwads & freeloaders?

other comments in the above post/link, from the 2019 prior thread
That's a lot of self-aggrandizing and winging over a simple little avatar tag.
I guess this is the "us" vs "them" norton board now... congrats fellas, enjoy your backslapping

Not sure how digging up a 5 year old thread to selectively cherry pick, editorialize and repost specific commentary from those you disagree with is some form of contribution.

Be it cash support or thread participation...your post goes a long way to reinforce my observations regarding usage of this site.

pls elaborate? what does that tell u about a particular user? along with all the other non vip members? they users also?

In a prior directly related thread, others added tightwads & freeloaders

Users?? tightwads & freeloaders? gimme a break

here's the full prior linked comment
It takes a special kind of person to start a thread (on an otherwise collegial, friendly and supportive PUBLIC forum) whose sole purpose is to single out other members and call them names like "freeloader" and "tightwads"... yup, that's what happening here. That's a lot of self-aggrandizing and winging over a simple little avatar tag.

If you don't get the connection with the prior thread, to this thread, that tells me everything i need to know about you & your type.

Defining non vip members as users, alone is absurd

I only joined up to share what I've done and I'm still doing with a P11 that others are not doing or if they are they are not talking about it here. I thought maybe P11 owners might get something out of what I've done. I'm not a British bike zealot or restorer, so plan to stop posting with my text babble after I get the last major thing done with the P11. Unfortunately for the VIP Members that have a problem with non VIP Members existing, the part I am planning to install won't be here until late February 2024.

I don't believe anyone here today considers non-VIP members to be freeloaders or tightwads. Jerry in previous threads cleared up that both are welcome.

I was just interested in why.

I'm sure some simply cannot afford it and others could but must think about the future. At our ages, you never know. The last three months my wife was alive I paid $10,000/month for a new drug that was not covered by Medicare. I've been working, saving, and investing for most of my life so it didn't kill me but there are plenty of 73-year-olds that don't have that kind of money.

I was also wondering if anyone would say that they wish they could be a VIP member, but can't justify the money. Some of us might do something about that.

It may be a US/Canada language difference, but the visitors, members, and VIP members are all users of this site - that's not a negative term in the US.

I do not view non VIP'S as freeloaders, skinflints, or cheapskates. Non VIP"s who contribute their knowledge base pay their way by what they contribute.

Those who are of lesser knowledge base and come here to learn, must in their hearts decide if what they learn is worth the price of VIP membership.

Those of us who are VIP"S, and of a broad and deep knowledge base, have a duty to God to spread our knowledge to all, without regard to the recipients ability or willingness to pay for such knowledge.

Slick
