Where to start; clutch or engine?

Most handy special order common vendor tool for this is the bent 1/4 Whitworth closed end wrench with side ground down some. Next most handy is 14 mm or 1/4 W with its walls ground down just enough on test fitting.

Well I didn't get this guy out yet, I'm guessing it has to come out before the head will. I tried to get a wrench in there but it would not fit. Suggestions?

In regards to the terms I don't understand; I'm not sure what the Rocker feed pipe banjo unions or what the three 7/32 in A.F socket headed screws are.

This is one of the hard fasteners to remove on both 750 and 850 engines. I found the factory tool once on ebay and it really makes life easier. Will send a photo later...I'm at work now.

I don't have anything on hand that I can use to ground down a wrench. If there is a factory tool for this I don't mind buying it.

I'll take any excuse to get a new tool so if there isn't a good option to buy the tool I'll buy something I can grind a wrench I have down some.

I'm in the process of getting the head off now. I think I got everything off to remove the head but it still wont budge. I'm going off the shop manual and some of the terms they use I'm not familiar with. Has any one posted some pictures of them taking a head off or maybe another manual to read over?

Their are 11 fastener in all on the head. 7 from above and 4 from below.
Edit OOps, my bad, 7 top 3 bottom

I don't think there is a special factory tool for that:

I use a 9/16 "6" point box wrench.

All I could find locally was 12 point wrenches, would this still work ?

Just looking at it, it doesn't look like it will fit.
12 point will not work. You need a 6 point 9/16. I am not saying that this is yhe best way to go, I'm just saying it will work. This option gives better result than grinding the flat of a 1/2" or 13mm opened end. It also give a better feel for torquing when you do not have the trick extension or the math skills to recalculate the values after adding the extension.

Here's a photo of the proper tool for this job. Factory tool for this head nut...found on ebay.

Where to start; clutch or engine?

Just took a look on ebay and no luck. Will look around some local places today to see if I can find something that will fit.

I welded a 3/8" drive 14mm 12 point socket on the end of a flat piece of steel and it works ok to get it off. I'm not sure I would use it to torque it down. You can get a 1/4" WW box end or ring spanner and grind it down until it goes on.

I can't find a 6 point 9/16 box wrench locally so I'm going to order one.

To make sure this is the right tool before I order it can someone check this out for me?

9/16 A/F (.563") will be a loose fit, and that is even slacker than 14mm (.551") as the nut hexagon size is 1/4 W (.525").

I tried to get a 14mm on there but it just wouldn't go on. I guess the edge of the wrench is too big? The proper thing to do would be to order a 1/4 whitworth box wrench?

This one works for me:

Where to start; clutch or engine?

It's a shorty. 5/16 BS = 1/4 W. Fits and gets in there fine on my '72. Never understood why the around the corner wrench was needed. The Snap-ons are nice because they have a very thin but strong box. This one I bought on eBay used and price wasn't too bad. I only own a couple Snap-On wrenches and the quality is very nice.

There's no guarantee that any wrench will fit, be it Whitworth/BS or 14mm, or anything else, as any standard type wrench may need grinding-that's why it's often better to just buy a cheap (metric?) wrench and grind it until it fits.

RGM sells the King Dick 1/4 BSW for £ 5.61 and I got one made by Kennedy from Hemmings for £ 7.95. Either one will have it here within a week, I've gotten things from RGM in 3 days. You will still have to grind the wall down to get it to go on. I used up a complete 6" grinding wheel making special tools for my rebuild.

If I had been in desperate need of that tool, then I would have hacksawed and filed one to shape from a piece of scrap metal.

The 14mm will be a better fit yet will still need to be a 6 point.

I got the 14 mm 6 point but it just wont fit into that space. I tried to grind it down a bit but all I have is a dremel and it takes forever to make any progress. I guess if there isn't a specific wrench I can buy with out having to grind down the walls I just need to get something thats going to make grinding easier, ha.
