What Did You Do With Your Commando Today?

I am fettling front forks and brake on my 20m3. Started Monday and mostly finished today. Think I never had them apart before even though I have owned this bike since about 2003. Both forks and brake were disappointing at the national rally, underdamped and leaking forks and odd occasional binding on drum front brake.

Brake - On disassembly, one brake pivot pin somewhat misaligned (slightly bent?) but appears to have ferodo green linings. Always stopped well except for recent occasional binding. Some light filing fixed short term problem but a reinforcing plate will now be acquired.

Fork - did a jim schmidt damping mod and then used conventional bushings and seals I already had in stock. General fettling.

Will also replace shocks with Hagons I won at the rally. May change the chain to a w ring takasago chain I bought. Hope to have it done by sunday. While I have been riding other bikes have not ridden a norton since rally.

Fun-fun.

Seeing as I have both exhaust head studs pulling (being upgraded to cNw head stud kit next month) I was inquisitive as to the resulting oil leak was having any effect on compression. So I bought myself a compression tester yesterday to find out.

With the engine fully warmed up and with a WOT both cylinders measured 140, nice😀 especially as they are equal. Of course that doesn’t necessarily answer my question as that figure could increase once the leak is sorted. I’ll perform another test after the work is carried out.
