As some of you know, I’m at the beginning of my journey. I’m at the researching and gathering parts stage.

I wonder if someone can answer this for me, pictures will help.

I understand that they’re differences with the trans cradle pre 1973 and 1973 on. From what I’m reading, the center stand attaches to the cradle on the 73 and beyond while the center stand attaches to the frame on pre ‘73.

I’m getting a ‘73 frame and I want to make sure that I have the correct cradle.

Can someone help me to understand the visual differences so when I’m shopping for a cradle, I can tell which is which?

Any help will be appreciated.

Steve

1971-on, including the 850 Mk3 although the Mk3 cradle has certain differences.

Pre-71.

Early cradles will have 1 hole at the bottom for the gearbox lower mount. Later versions will have an additional 2 holes for the center stand and spring.

for the MK3 the big difference is in the axle slot. The MK3 slots are closed off and the others are open all because of the axle adjusters. The 1969 has a strange center stand, far different from all the others. I have one if anybody needs one.

What would these be and what holes are you referring to?

These may be the same, but I’m trying to identify the differences.

The later ones also have holes for the oil filter base on the right hand side, which both of those have. I would say they are both later.

Ok so the 2 little holes at the top of the picture were for an oil filter?

That will help me identify the cradle?

OIl filter fitted from 1972 so 1971 cradle does not have the drillings, but does have drillings for centerstand. Mk3 cradle has no slot for upper gearbox mount, just a drilling, but it has two tubes on the swingarm spindle tube to receive the spindle locking cotters. 1968-1970 has no drilling for centerstand mount or oil filter mount. (These can easily be added.)

Does anyone have a picture of a ‘73 cradle?

A picture is a lot easier to understand than a description.

This is from the service manual for the 850.

Can anyone specifically show me the difference between this and the pre ‘72 cradle?

It doesn't help that the photos are two opposite sides, and one is shown upside down! But, they are the same.

I think I got it. This first picture has the two little holes and the second picture does not. So I assume it’s the little holes that determine the two.

I think GP is referring to the cradles in post #8.
The bottom cradle on the wood table is a correct cradle.
