Swingarm Dust Seals vs Oil Seals

The earlier version which is a metal cupped washer and o-ring is called a "Dust Seal" and cost about 10 bucks per side. Is the Mk3 seal actually better? Or just more expensive?

Despite the fact that my project bike is fairly low miles these plastic seals were not in very good shape, which makes me wonder if they are more prone to damage during use.
