I’ll heat it up tomorrow and beat the crap out of it. Worst case scenario, I buy a new cradle

Or consider finding someone with a hydraulic press, even a Chinesium HF and ease it out, not that you know what it is you are trying to remove and if it is removable.

No one said it is easy and the world is watching. :D

I have a lathe, milling machine and all manner of other contraptions to help me which I regard as a minimum for these old tubs so you are braver than me.
Keep at it, but keep the hammering (unless it squeaks) to a minimum.

I suspect the previous owner attempted to solve the Commando swing arm bush leak problem, with those tapered roller bearings. There must have been a modified swing arm to carry those bearings. If this theory is correct, the bolts represent the spindles for those bearings, and what we think is the original spindle is a filler, and may be welded in place.

Time Warp's suggestion to use a hydraulic press is the best approach.

Good luck with it.

Slick

This looks like the tapered bearing mod that was offered in the 1980's by RGM and/or Norvil ,sure someone else will remember this mod.

Could this be an upgrade if I rebuild the 1980 modification or was it a failure?

The mod at the time was expensive and required the cradle and swingarm to be sent to the supplier and was then modified and returned to the customer. The mod meant that the bearings could be pumped with grease and the bearings were more substantial and adjustable while the original sintered bronze bushes/seals had trouble retaining lubrication and were prone to wear in several places and surfaces and were not adjustable apart from side play with shims and the centre pin/cradle moded to lock firmly in place .There must be someone on here who has had this mod to their bike .

It’s really interesting. If the mod was an upgrade, I wonder if I should pursue this direction?

If anyone has any information on this, I’d appreciate it.

Soak the whole thing in WD 40 for a month. Cook it with heat gun heat then sledgehammer or press the thing out.
