I'm trying to fit a hyde fork brace and have discovered the seals in my forks are only a finger tight push and I doubt they would stay in the hyde extensions, are the original seals a tighter fit or is there something else that fits better :?:

You may not have a problem. Leak proof seals float up and down in a chamber. This allows the slider to gain momentum before working the seal to prevent Stiction.

What seals are you trying to fit? Are they the 'Leakproof' type?

Leakproof seals must have the retaining washers fitted on top of the seals (with enough clearance to allow the seals to move up and down):

Previous Hyde brace fork seal thread: post33942.html

I just got some leak proof seals and reading the instructions and doing a run-thru installation yesterday, and the instructions said that several kits (the Norton one included) did not come with washers. There were none included in the package either. It did seem like there was going to be a lot of space between the top hat bushing and the screw in retainer ring. Am I missing something?

[Edit] Norton seals are retained by the threaded ring, so retaining washers aren't required for Roadholders, but even so, there must be a free space between the seals and threaded retainers for the Leakproof seals to move.

Ok that wasn't very helpfull,as you pointed out in the previous thread LAB, the seals for the hyde extensions are held in by an interference fit I have no problem with that it works for nearly every other motorcycle.Question is if I get standard seals will they be a tight fit in the top of of the hyde fork extensions, as in the standard set up there is no need for the seals to be a tight fit in the sliders as the top cap holds it all in place. The seals I have now are very pliable with no metal inserts for strength.
As a side note to my question if the leak proof seals are thinner, what stops the top hat bush moving up to the seal anyway as it would appear to me the seal holds it in place under the nut. :?:

The standard seals should fit tightly (and doesn't Coco mention in the other thread that he found them to be quite a tight fit in the Hyde extensions?) "

The OEM type seals are really tight and can not be pressed in by hand into the extensions so I'll have to make a drift of some sort to press the seal in to the Hyde extension so I don't damage the seal
Don't you have the old seals handy that you could try?

Hopefully, the top bushes will be a reasonably tight fit in the sliders, so they shouldn't move? Will the threads on the extenders reach down far enough to hold the top bushes in place when they are screwed home?

Yes the extension are longer by the amount of the seal

Ever tried fitting fork gators to a hyde fork brace :?: :?: , what bloody torture that was, I haven't punished my self like that in 30 years of self abuse

For the Hyde brace, standard seals must be used to keep a tight fit. Leak Proof brand seals will work but there is a retaining ring needed to hold them in place so they don't move up and down with the action of the forks, as stated earlier in this thread. I ran into the same problem you did. Stock seals fit very well and stayed nice and snug and didn't move like the Leak Proof ones did.

But CoCo, That is the whole point of running them, they have to float so you deal with it with a little mod to get the life out of them. My set is 7 years old no leaks. My friends is 15 years no leaks it has been taken apart a few times but no new seals. With the bugs we get in the summer time full gators are needed nothing cuts seals quicker than bug guts. A tight fitting seal is doomed to change out at least twice a year around here with just the booties.
