Really,... who's desk is this? I'm sure by your standards, he's an idiot....

Punch list

Errrr, kinda different process ...

Fair enough though. I guess those with an IQ of 160 can manage without being tidy...

Meanwhile, down at my level of IQ, I need to stack the odds more in my favour !

I doubt Einstein would have been able to change spark plugs, nor would he known the reason for doing so.

No he wouldn't
He's too busy time traveling with Doc Emmet Brown!

I loved the fact that Einstein refused to wear socks because they always have a hole in them!!

Sorry, I'll take brilliant guy who's sloppy over someone who's less knowlegeable and less skilled, but neater. I don't think there's an inherent correlation between the 2 qualities. (where as Jim does believe that)

If you don't think Einstein would understand points, coils, spark plugs firing, and AF ratio, go here and spend a few years reading his Field equations and see if you can understand them. I doubt you'll wonder if he could understand "spark plugs" after you read a bit of that link below...

When I had my big shop, I had plenty of room to have dedicated work areas and organized tools for those procedures. Now that I have a tiny shop, it's much more chaotic. It's purely a function of accepting a less efficient work area and work processes, so I don't have a huge monthly nut to crack. I'm not less skilled now because I don't have a better organized work area than I previously did. In fact, I'm actually more skilled because I've learned a lot more in the time since I've downsized.

Would I like to have a big, well organized space to work out of??? A) of course! *(publisher's clearing house come knock on my door, powerball lottery, etc...)

There is little connection between a brilliant quantum physicist and a superb mechanic. Not the same aptitude requirement or discipline. I worked with some rocket scientists who couldn’t pour piss out of a boot with the instructions written on the heel.

If I work on 1 project area is neat and organized. Problem since retiring is 20 smaller projects in all stages going being worked on intermittently with Norton receiving attention on demand.....Wifey comes rooting too looking for what she calls 'girly tools'.

I'm going for a ride and dribble some oil on the streets.

You've forgotten to start a thread on what oil/tyres/battery to use before you even consider starting it, are you mad

Ah, but I bet they could get it in very accurately ;)

It’s funny how we’re all different. Personally I felt the need to get more tidy when I downsized because it was the only way to A) fit everything in B) be able to move around C) stand a chance of finding what I need!

Well after not seeing my Whitworth tools in almost 40 years there was no point in searching because it was obvious that I was not informed that they evaporate over time, so I just purchased what was needed. When more are needed they shall be purchased and kept in an airtight container to prevent evaporation again. You won't see me being caught by that one again.....

The mess shall grow to fill the space allotted.

I'm obsessive about keeping engine components clean
I have a vast array of freezer bags and industrial cling film for larger items like petrol tanks/mudguards etc
Also I spend a lot of time cleaning tools before I use them

Straw man argument... I worked with sailors who couldn't swim.. Your example isn't real, it's just your opinion of some people you supposedly worked with...

I have a friend who's a boeing engineer who brings his mechanical shit to me for special modifications. My welder is an ace. His place isn't "tidy" at all. He's always got 5 projects going at once, and a full time job. My machinist is a retired boeing machinist who's place isn't a mess, but it's not "tidy" either and he's also amazing.

I don't beleive that skill and neatness correlate and you do, probably based on our personal habits. The difference is that your belief assumes people without your habitual neatness are less skilled than you, and my belief doesn't assume a level of skill based on the neatness factor.

In your case, you may not perform as many different functions in your space as I do. Assembly doesn't take up the same amounts of space as fabrication, painting, and all the other stuff I do for a living. Yeah, you have some wrenches to wipe off and put away.

Today, I'm rebuilding the extra stainless steel clutch cables that I have to have a traveling extra one. Ordering a new one from AN doesn't take as much space, nor require tools or a clean up afterward...

What’s your problem? Trying to justify sloppiness?
