Perfect for a new build is when it starts with the first kick and then bring it to 2500 rpm immediately. Kicking it through repeatedly does nothing any good.

Did you see the number of views my kicking video got? :D

I like to keep the tank and seat off untill it is running and has bedded the cam... i use a fuel gravity feed line to the carbs (enima bag). easier to keep an eye on things...

Don't forget the cooling fan. If you run a fresh motor at 2500 rpm for 15 or 20 minutes without riding it, you will have a seriously overheated motor, unless you have a cooling fan.

Do I wait to run it that long on first startup? I have to look to see if I even have a fan.

Keep in mind that the cam and lifters are not new or refreshed. And they are paired. So it’s not like the need broken in. It’s the rings that need bedded.

So more like a top end job. I thought the rings should get a range of rpms?

Start bike. Timing was set statically but should be close. Check for oil coming back to tank while keeping bike running. Set timing with strobe? Set carbs? Go for ride around neighborhood?

Or start it up and hold revs at 2500 for 15 mins?

When you start it rev it straight away above 2500 rpm as you don't have a fan just run it briefly, enough to strobe it up if necessary
Then take it out and ride it needs various throttle openings
Personally I don't go over 5000rpm straight away and I use running in oil , others will have a different opinions
The other thing I'd add is that I always scrub the hell out of a freshly bored barrel to remove all of the debris from the cylinder wall
Don't let the engine get too hot , don't be afraid to rev it but don't let it lug
This works for me, my commando dosent smoke or use oil
Cheers

+1 to that but at the risk of sounding pedantic, I only scrub with hot soapy water and wipe until clean with a oil soaked lint free rag in a around the bore direction and never up and down. o_O
As I said this is only what I do, I scrub it with a scourer in all directions
I use washing machine powder
This works for me
The only thing I can't bring myself to do is start the engine with a completely dry bore although many recommend it
Cheers

you need to tidy up before doing anything else swoosh...

Nonsense. That's work in progress. My tool cart looks rather similar right now, including the block-o'-wood. Though I have a different paper towel holder :D

Let me get this right....You use a douche bag on your carbs right?...Sounds to me like you're playing.
Slap that puppy together and boogey...Need evidence too of you on it, dogs chasing you, neighbors chasing you with hoes & rakes early in the morning for waking them up, & kids with snow cones cuz it is a hot summer....Did I miss anything?
My advice is to follow your happy plan.
