An update on parts from the shop We are in our first production run of clutch centers. The five preproduction units are on bikes now for testing. So far testing looks very good

These centers are 4340 alloy and heat treated to 48 to 52 Rockwell C. Superior finish of the clutch plate spline teeth.

Should be in stock at CNW within 30 to 45 days

Hi John, will the testing be done with a mix of different type of plates?
I run standard clutch parts in my race bike and they are harsh on the clutch centres.
I am due for a replacment in both bikes.

We have tested with several clutch plates. Biggest difference was the metal material of the plate (alum or steel)

The spine teeth are through hardened, not just case hardened. The finish is better than 63. We have seen no wear on the test units.

I know this sounds a little like a sales pitch, but, it may be the last clutch center you have to buy.

You should be coming up on your race season soon. How about testing one for me. PM me an address and I will send you one for testing (no charge). Would love to have one tortured on a Kiwi race bike. It might give me a reason for a business trip to New Zealand. I am buying so many items for my Nortons from New Zealand, I need to check out my suppliers. And, buy the way, great pipes, we have run them on the race bikes all season with great results. The guy I race with has the pipes on his bike, and he took the national championship this year.

I like the sound of that. My center is notched pretty bad and needs replacement soon.

John, last year you were planning on developing a 2-into-1 exhaust for the 961 similar to the race system you used in the 2016 race season.
Is this still in the works, or not?

Could still be done. I slowed down on offering anything 961 because of the sprocket offering. Lots of people said they wanted them, so I made 20 and very few people came to matt to order

So, yes they can be made, but special order, with a 50% up front payment. I think they would be about $2500 to $2800. This would be all new exhaust from head to silencer

Bummer, I just buttoned up my primary a couple of weeks ago. I run a mixed stack of bronze and Barnett plates.

John - do you know how hard the new AN centers are?

Its coming up to the end of our season for this year, one round of a one day club series coming up, plus two days of the NZCMRR seaon ender, plus back road testing and possibly a dyno run leading up to those races.
Should be enough to put it through its paces.

Has anyone actually found that a notched clutch centre makes any difference to the clutch action? The clutch pates are not moving along the spline just having the pressure taken off them. After a good few years with bronze plates, my splines are notched. Gone back to fibre plates for lightness with no issues.

Hi John,

I am impressed by the spec and quality of parts your company is able to manufacture.

However, this transmission endeavor makes me wonder what the rationale might be? Are the OEM gears shredding teeth, or is rate of pitting alarmingly high? That might well be!
We are probably talking of gears for high-performance motors here.

I would have thought that a redesign of the mainshaft, countershaft, sprocket, bearing and possibly the clutch centre to reduce the cantilever effect would have been a far more rewarding action.

I gather your mainshaft and countershaft combo will not reduce tip deflection appreciably.

On another note, is work still progressing on the sprag mechanism for the Mk3 which was announced earlier? I know a lot owners are waiting in anticipation, me included!

As far as notched clutch centres, yes it does make a difference to clutch release and potential slippage.
Once there are notches , the plates tend to find their way back into each notch and as the friction plates wear, there seems to be more slippage the more notched the centre becomes and so goes the degradation.
I have also noticed on the race bike, as the notching increases,that I get clutch drag on the start line, then adjust that out only to get slippage under full power.
A non notched centre gives full engagement even after the plates wear a bit as there is no where for the friction plates to align to.
Make sence?
John, I will run the clutch centre in the Roadster as soon as racing is completed for the year, that will also get some big useage

+1 on that! I fitted a new Andover Norton rear sprocket many years ago, I should've queried it then but the internal diameter of the brake drum seems a tad too large – the rear brake cable needs to be almost at its tightest adjustment for the brake to work satisfactorily, even with new brake shoes. Come to think of it tho, although I bought the sprocket from a long-standing supplier, and it came with the 'magic' genuine parts card, it could've been a fake ... On the other hand the sprocket teeth are holding up well. So ...! :wink:
 
hmm, maybe you should be using a proper cush drive hub with one piece axle , same sprocket steel and hardness as the original.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. I was talking about the gearbox sprocket not the drum sprocket. I will edit that.
There are issues with the rear drum with the paddles being too long (depending where you by them) there are pads you can add to the shoes to correct your brake cable https://andover-norton.co.uk/en/shop-de ... oe-slipper but this is for another thread.
Now back to your regular same Bat time same Bat channel. :mrgreen:

Ah ok thanks – yes the brake shoes I last fitted came with those slippers installed, and I've since added an extra pair, they're quite secure and won't be going anywhere ... But indeed, back to the topic!
