My brother's new MkIII Interstate arrived via truck from Tasmania (there was a boat trip included) at his home in Brisbane this afternoon. He is over the moon with it. I flew down to Tassy myself a few weeks back and checked it out for him as he was sick and knew little about MkIII's. It was in immaculate condition and ran beautifully. So I slapped a $1000 deposit on it for him, then phoned my brother to say it was now his.

He did not stop phoning me all this afternoon to tell me everything about it, which I already knew. He drove me crazy!

In original pristine condition, bar a Mikuni carb and electronic ignition, it is probably the best unrestored Commando I have seen here in Australia. It was originally imported from the States some years back so has no fork gaiters. It may have undergone a rebuild somewhere in its life, hard to believe it could look and run so well after forty years if not.

My brother has only ever owned one Norton, a bone jarring butchered Atlas many many years ago, apart from many and varied makes and models through the years till now. So he is now the proud owner of his very first Commando.

He actually posts in here, under an alias, so stand by for a blast of posts :D

I am truly very happy for him.

It has been said many many times, without pictures, it didn't happen. I am affraid without some visuals, I am calling bullshit on this. Maybe your brother will be clever enough to figure out how to post photos. :P

After the Atlas, at least his teeth fillings will stop falling out :!: :D

Yes, but after the fillings, then went the teeth. And to this day, he stills sees double vision!

When I saw Adjustable Wrench = Shifter,
I became highly suspicious and scrolled down no further. Obviously pete.v was behind this.
Any English professional mechanic (i.e one that wears a grey dust coat and tie and would now be 80 plus yrs old) would wash his mouth out with soap if he ever said "wrench"!!
It was "Adjustable Spanner"…..only!

And any professional bullshit artistic who said "one that wears" instead of "one who wears" would also have his mouth washed out with soap. I got chucked out of that forum, so here I am.
What is a Norton anyway??

But I promise some photos.
Even one of Jenny riding my MkIII in a bikini, with me on the back…….naked!!
Egad!!!!

I'll cut you a deal, I'll edit the photo of Jenny and me on the MkIII.
I'll cut out the back half.

And post the back half only.

I think perhaps you need to read that again?

US = UK (not UK = US)

Adjustable wrench"(US) = Adjustable" (spanner) or "Shifter", (UK)

Yay another MK3 :D Sounds like a nice original bike can't wait for the photos (bet it hasn't got black cap silencers though! I think I'm the one and only fan of them!)

Made me laugh at the UK vs US terminology. When I was on the tools (chemical plant) we used to call a six inch adjustable spanner a 'pair of two's', 10 inch were 'a pair of four's', 15 inch were 'a pair of sixes'. Must be a Cheshire thing I suppose :D

Now L.A.B. has gotten me somewhat puzzled. I am not going to argue with a pom about his own terminology. But when I was a youngster my dad, an ex Spitfire fighter pilot who loved all things English insisted we never use the word "wrench" which he said was what they used to fix Mustangs with, not Spitfires.

I think L.A.B. has spent too much time being brain washed by pete.v about MkIII's AND spanners! :P

OK, I think I know what you mean now, as it wasn't the "adjustable wrench/spanner" entry, but the previous "Spanner = Wrench" entry which was reversed-now corrected.

I think it may be a matter of a ' R ' and as to wether its there or not , so a matter of context . Though MIDAS showed a idiot approaching a car with a shifting spanner on their T. V. adds announcing their expertise . :)

I see, so that wrench I have in my tool box is actually a wench?
I might have to bail out here. If Jenny gets a whiff of any of this,
she is going to belt me over the head with a wench!!

One other thing not quite right on my brother's MkIII is the fitting of a 3.50 rear tyre, and front for that matter. Should both be 4.10.
There was a 3.50 front option, but it was listed as a Dunlop ribbed only.

If I were him, I would smash it to pieces for such an intolerable indiscretion!!

Might pay to put some of these fancy modern sticky things on it , if the brakes work . with all this traffic around these days .
Better have some pictures , Please .

This is what would be called a spanner in the U.S. More specifically a peg spanner. Actually, there are four stacked upon one another.

The adjustable wrench is more likely to be called a Crescent wrench. Crescent being a brand name. Kind of like how we Yanks call a facial tissue a Kleenex.

I have always called that tool a crescent, shifter seems more common in Australia.

a crescent wrench is also called a "monkey" wrench, at least while I was growing up here in the states

Two countries separated by a common language, to borrow a phrase.

A monkey wrench would be the one on the left. It was used primarily to turn the large square axle nuts on horse drawn wagons. The tapered jaws were to fit inside the wooden hub to access the axle nut. The jaws would actually be inline with the axle as opposed to a right angle.
