Hello all,

just thought I'd introduce myself. Just got a basket (well, plastic-tub) case MkII 850 that was another guy's project until he decided to focus on a different one. He bought it from the original owner who'd let it sit for *many* years (it only has 4500 miles), and then took it completely apart, which was necessary as the frame needs work and it has a stuck valve.

I've owned two other Commandos (Combat 750, and a 71 Hi-Rider) plus an Atlas so I'm a little familiar with them. I've been looking for a few years for another, but nothing ever seemed the right price and once they get listed on CL they're gone.

What really got me on this one, even though there's lots of corrosion and rust, was how un-bodged (to put it politely) everything was. The drain screws at the bottom of the forks that are always gouged out and mangled? Pristine. Primary case? No pry marks from screwdrivers. Wiring harness? Appears uncut and brand new. Things like that. The other good thing was when he took it apart he labeled everything. Then he went and bought a lot of stuff at swap meets to replace the beyond-hope bits (wheels, fork tubes, headlight shell, etc). All nicely stored in three plastic tubs.

I think the final kicker was that he had gotten the tank and covers painted - I guess I'm a sucker for nice paint. So long story short, it'll be a bit of a project getting it together but it'll be nice to get it on the road. Hopefully after the frame / head work it'll mainly be assembling without having to buy too many new bits. I'll keep you all posted. Oh, and because "this bike doesn't exist without pictures" here's some art; not sure if I should call it "Norton, deconstructed" or "Hope springs eternal in my basement"...

-Steve

Frame looks better in this pic than it really is (Krylon paint job):

Steve, welcome to commando central. Looks like you got a good project and the paint is already finished! That could be a good motivator to finish the project faster having a nice tank and side covers to look at while working. I own a couple mk2 850's as well.

I'd be a sucker for that red paint too (did I just say that out loud?!?!?!).

Looks like a great project!

Very nice. I have to agree how nice it is to get your hands on a bike that hasn't been boogered up by a previous owner. At least this way you know who to blame for all the butchery! Looking foward to progress reports.

Ha! I can always find someone else to blame: the parts guy, eBay, my parents, society...

When I looked at the condition of the bolts I'd realized lots of them had never seen a screwdriver, and knew that only folks with a vintage bike / car sickness would appreciate.

Now the good part,.. building it up just how you want it..... 920,rear sets, single seat, alloy wheels, stainless steel.... Or not..... Another lovely 850 soon to hit the road.

Oh La La Steve, delicious starting kit with some of it already beautiful. A red gas tank on a P11 got me into Nortons a long time ago so nice tingle to me. Un-boogered fasteners is extra icing. Be sure to heat the snot of them and use close fit as in gun driver set and penatrent and likely and impactor to break free and stay nice as can be. That'd be the biggest challenge to me. I've seen pristine factory looms on decades old 750, a sight to behold how well planned and placed, just not able to service much before it ain't so nice and orderly.

Wheels are pretty cheap even to go alloy and stepped SS spokes. Bring another one into this world again for us all.

Rare sights indeed!
That red and silver paint looks good.

Welcome Steve. There is nothing wrong with a Norton project in several rubber tubs or even a few Styrofoam ice chests. Sadly they are becoming rarer in this condition. Most end up in swap meets or on eBay. I will be great to see another Norton back from the dead. By the way, don't knock a rattle can frame paint job. I have done a couple that looked really nice and held up really well.

Tubs are all well and good! I had to tear my bike down to a basketcase anyway, so I would've been better off just buying one already disassembled! Looks like you've got a lot of really nice stuff to work with.

I was thinking the same thing. It all looks rather nice in just bits. Now you can dive right in without the temptation to get it running and just ride it for a while. I used to think it was funny when someone would tell me "I've done all the hard work" when referring to the assortment of boxes, ice chests and disintegrating shopping bags I was contemplating purchasing. Now I am not so sure that they were far off the mark.

Welcome to the forum!

That's a great starting point in that you know you're not missing a lot of little bits that end up making a typical basket case cost more than a runner before it's ever running (don't ask how most of us know this).

Plus, you got the INSPIRATION (paint job to look at).

Thanks all. I just need to stop reading the upgrade threads (otherwise I'll end up getting a new headsteady, Landsdowne fork internals, PowerArc, Brembo brake setup, CNW case breather and who knows what else before I get it on the road)! Right now I'll (try and) stick with straight clean / paint / assembly but will do the vernier iso upgrade and anti-sump valve. Probably will go EI as I'm sure the advance is rusted solid.

Big Jim, I wasn't dissing Krylon - I was saying it made the frame look better than it was.

Here's 2 more pics - one the guy sent me of what it looked like 1/2 way through disassembly and one showing the damage to the bottom of the frame from rust. Tomorrow I'm bringing it to a local Brit Bike resto guy who does paint to get his opinion on how to proceed. I'm hoping I don't need a new frame...

Regarding that frame...these bikes are pretty resiliant but they aren't known for having an overbuilt frame. It would be easy to be concerned about how much integrity that tube still has. There are others here with more practical experience than I in such matters, but I would be tempted to turn that one into wall art.

I don't think I would use it either. E Bay can be your friend ( worst nightmare )
