Hello all, I've been riding and wrenching for 30+ years, and I'm excited about my first Norton project, a 1971 Commando.
Past projects include a 1974 Trident and 1976 Sportster, both bought as basket cases and brought back to life.
My first question is, where to purchase the best shop manual? Not a PDF, but a real book with pages!

First congrats and my complete admiration for you on your ability to bring these machines back to life. I kept my eye on eBay for mine but I'm sure cheaper to be had here in the classifieds. All the best with your build!

Thank you, trying to upload pics through imgur -

Welcome. Look forward to hearing about progress.

I bought my workshop manual direct from Andover Norton, along with spare parts I needed, to save on postage. I'm guessing you might not be in the UK ("wrenching"). If you're not in the UK, worth stating where you are, to get the best suggestions.

Thank you, I am in North Carolina, USA

Manual 06-5146.

You should have no problem finding the shop manual and don't forget a parts manual with any supplements specific to your model. Consider purchasing a 4-ring binder like this one for your parts book since the binding always seems to crack and the pages fall everywhere. I would also very highly recommend the Norman White's Norton Commando Restoration manual. Finally, the Norton Tech Digest of compiled tips and tricks is very useful as well.

Hope there is more to it than what's in the pics if not hope you have big pockets lol, anyway welcome to the madness, lots of good people on here and lots of experience, I have a only two workshop manuals that I have had for over 46 years and they have everthing needed to work on the Norton, one of my manuals also has the high performance section in the back, it looks like you have your work cut out on this project but what fun you will have as well frustrations, both go hand in hand and I am sure you already know that, anyway welcome.

Enjoy the journey.

Inmates are running the asylum here. ;) It's the right place for a Norton owner looking for diverse ideas and plenty of help.

Pic looks about $18K US short of finished to me. However, I have no idea what you want to accomplish.

Yes, I have several boxes of parts, but no front end, gas tank, or seat.

The availability of new Commando parts is impressive. But can be pricey. Used bits may take time and patience, but you may get lucky with what's hanging around in forum members' hoards? It's great another Commando will be rescued. Just don't ask which oil to use, when you get to that stage! :)

There is no need to ask.

Lol. yes, I know about not asking about oil from other forums! It's a subject where people get chatty
