Re: Boyer Kit

Can anyone help me with this Boyer kit? I'm trying to understand what exact model it is. It looks to be a MKIII, but on the black box (pic 3), it states MICRO-MK III UNIT. SO is it a micro power or micro digital, and what exactly does that mean?

It is the basic unit. You will do well by it and they work fine. That is what I installed on my MKIIa back in 1980 and that is about what I paid for it back then, from Mr. Klein at GT Motors in Lansing I hope that's not what you paid for yours.

Thanks for the replies. The kit came with the bike. It's good to know people are happy with their Boyer ignitions. I may as well install it.

Haha. Nice. Thanks for the links. ya, I'll do some shopping around. I'm in no rush right now. Gotta get the frame taken care of first and foremost.

Here's some pics from the weekend, tinkering on my Honda 750:

I was just given a 10 amp Emgo Stator and a 200w podtronics reg/rec/capacitor. Will these work together?? Is 200w that maximum output the Podtronics unit can handle? Would it work with a stock or the Emgo stator that I was given?

Cheers
Dan

Yes.

Single phase Hi-Power regulator with Battery Eliminator - designed for up to 200 watt stators.

Yes, it should be suitable for either (that's assuming the "stock" stator is the standard single-phase RM21?)

Yours looks pretty familiar.
I think mine had signals, extra wiring under the tank but not sure.
Nice bike. Still working on mine. New guy did you post photos? I dont see any.
Be prepared to open the wallet, I got out of control but its back on the road..

Hello new guy!
I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that your bike probably started life as a Roadster
like this one:

That 16" rear rim is not stock, did not have turn signals.

The mechanicals on these bikes are not really all that tough to figure out. Most issues people have are with the electrical system
(ignition/charging) and the old Amal carbs. Basically keeping the thing in tune enough to run.

Luckily, there are modern replacements for the old stuff that will dramatically increase the reliability ,
Electronic Ignitons and solidstate charging stuff as well as modern day carburetors.

Search the site, there is a lot of information available as well as some of the best norton gurus in the business on this site.
Good luck, and start saving your pennies now. you're gonna need every cent that you got!

Well it's been about 4 years, I figure it's time for an update on the bike.

Shortly after picking it up, I had the frame inspected and it was quite twisted up. So I replaced the frame and with the bike completely apart, I boxed the bike up until I would have time to focus on it.

Last fall, I jumped back into building it. I wanted to start with a rolling chasis, so I figured rebuilding the front end would be the first task...

Once the forks were finished up, I installed them and noticed a large twist in the triple trees. An impulsive eBay purchase and a couple weeks later, I was back on track.

I started throwing the bike together, but the shorty shocks and 16" rear wheel were killing me. I was hoping for more of a tracker/desert sled look. My buddy (and forum member) Rennie hooked me up with some spokes and replacement rim (among many other things! Thank you Rennie!!!).

Since the exhaust that came with the bike were completely unusable, I sourced some high pipes to slap on :) Also found a cheap VM34 and put together a single mikuni conversion. A friend of mine had an old Yamaha MX80 tank collecting dust on his shop wall and he was kind enough to donate to the cause...

With the dual 19's on and some fresh rubber. It's starting to come together.

I decided to take the top end apart and see what was going on inside. It must have injested a screw as there was a large screw impression on the top of one of the cylinders and a few nicks in the combustion chamber that i smoothed out. I picked up some fresh 0.040 pistons and rings, got the cylinders honed and deglazed, and a valve job. Should seal up great!

Last week, I swapped out the head studs with the ARP studs.

I installed the cylinders using no gasket and Loctite's anaerobic sealant. I torqued the head using Motion Pro's torque wrench adapter which I highly recommend. I installed the head as well and then started piecing things on such as the carb, oil lines, exhaust, etc.

I really wanted a clean look under the tank, so I removed the front tank/coil mount and moved the coil back at the battery box mount. This is how she looks as of last night. Still much to do: finish off the gear box, install the clutch, build the rear wheel guts, etc etc...

With an open hole in primary case, did you check the chain.

Keri in NZ has the Merc big pin duplex which is an excellent replacement for the triplex.
