kit including 6 piston caliper, fork slider and 320mm disc, no brake hose. probably $480

That is very cheap .
What material is the rotor ?
( nice work , btw..)

I suspect his labor costs are very low.

This really looks great. Are you casting the caliper bodies yourself as well? Are the pistons/seals from some readily available source? I would vote for silver or gray calipers.
Brendan

Has anyone considered repro`ing the J.P.N.racing type leading axle Lockheed opposed piston caliper fork legs?
How different were they compatibilty-wise with stock road-holder stanchions & the like?
Interesting that the Ducati 750SS front end was very similar too.

Brendan, the calipers are Tokico, they were common on a lot of Suzuki and Kawasakis, these are slightly modified to give some clearance for the rear fender stay, the halves are bolted together with Stainless Allen
head bolts, I'm working on a brake line and the fittings to be supplied with the kit, the standard Norton mastercylinder will work perfectly as long as its sleeved to 1/2", this could be another option to the kit,
Regarding color, I was planning to powdercoat some in gloss black, gold and silver just to see what they look like and get opinions from there, color options should not be a problem
so , yes seals etc would be available but I think it would be a long time between drinks

You could most likely count me in on this setup also, since I love my rearsets so much.

I vote for black or silver calipers also.

Is anything on a Commando DOT rated at all ???

Perhaps the tires.
Which is the bit that contacts the road.....

And the big green dots on the speedo tacho.

Or aren't they dots...

Technically they don't look like globes.

Blobs could be more accurate....

It would have all had to be compliant to all std's when it left the factory, and the factory would have had the documentation for it even if the part was usless rubbish,it would be nice to know that the parts meet the required std, the caliper will due to the fact it comes from a iso std factory I'm sure madass doesn't want to provide bad quality parts, but it should be proved that it meets the required std.

......wits

So would ANY new parts bought for Commandos these days meet those standards. ??
Tires excepted....

The factory no longer exists, so testing for standards meeting sure isn't happening.
And very few, if any, of the oem suppliers still exist either.

The other side of that coin is that many parts will (should) be better, since materials and manufacturing has vastly improved since then. Provided its not 3rd world manufacture... ?

P.S. All these sleeving/downsizing master cylinder mods certainly wouldn't meet any DOT standards.

But produce better braking....

PPS I've had a motorcycle 'incident' where the cast iron brake disks broke in half. Literally.
(Not Norton, but similar vintage). The front disc on my current Commando project has more chrome worn off one side (half circle) of the disc - so its warped. Sighhhhhhh.
And too thin, from new, to regrind.

What does that say about oem equipment meeting standards... ?

correct, but anyone fitting brembo, nissin ,etc know they are using brake parts made to the required ISO std's

Why ?

My brembo calipers have no model numbers on them, nor are they individually numbered.
If Brembo became aware of any material or quality problems, no way could they track these as being part of any problem.

Some aircraft standards, where they track every single item ever made and every component going into an assembly may be different. Adds immensly to the cost though, motorcycles just aren't in that league. ?

Other brake disks I have at least have a minimum thickness cast/stamped/written into them, Nortons don't even have this. Or specified in the manual, anywhere.

You applying space age standards to pre space age Commandos ??
Be interesting to know what standards brake parts have to meet - then and now ??
Huge aftermarket industry though...
